When someone thinks about the definition of a father, he or she thinks about the support, care, love, and knowledge a father gives to his offspring. Most people automatically believe that biological fathers, along with the mothers, raise their children. However, that is not always the case. There are many children across the world who are raised without their father. These children lack a father figure. People do not realize how detrimental the lack of a father figure can be to the child, both mentally and emotionally. Enrolling boys between the ages of 5 to 16 without father figures in programs, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, that involve building a relationship with someone who can serve as a role model is essential to prevent males from depression, difficulty in expressing emotions, and other consequences of having an absent father figure. A father is someone who protects, loves, supports and raises his children, whether they are biologically related or not. Every single person living on the Earth has a biological father. These biological fathers are supposed to take the responsibility of being a father because they did help bring a child into this world. One of the main responsibilities of a father is providing the child with the necessities of life, which include food, shelter, and clothes. Children who have fathers who are involved in their lives, whether the children are biological, adopted, or step children, have a better chance of excelling socially, emotionally, and academically. However, if there is no way of obtaining a father figure for a child, mentoring programs are definitely great places for a child to learn about relationships, principles and morals, discipline, and trust. This program fixes the problem of an absent father or father figure. With this program, the emotional damage that an absent father causes to a child can be repaired and saved.

Although single parenthood is on the rise in homes today, children still often have a father role in their life. It does not matter who the part is filled by: a father, uncle, older brother, grandfather, etc...; in almost all cases, those relationships between the father (figure) and child have lasting impacts on the youth the rest of their lives. In “I Wanted to Share My Father’s World,” Jimmy Carter tells the audience no matter the situation with a father, hold onto every moment.
Father figures are an important thing in any boy (or maybe even girl's life growing up). A father figure is usually an older man, normally one with power, authority, or strength, with whom one can identify with on a deeply psychological level and who generates emotions generally felt towards one's father. A man to whom a person looks up and whom he treats like a father (Marcus Marchand), or a substitute for a person's biological father, who performs typical paternal functions and serves as an object of identification and attachment (Artkin). Father figures aren't exactly prevalent in After the First Death, (Just Artkin and Marcus Marchand) but there's enough.
Fathers show love towards their children so that they can have a visual example of how to love. In the article it quotes, “A father’s love for his children is often expressed in the sacrifices they make, whether in times of crisis or just in the everyday choices of family life” (Source C). This shows that Fathers will do whatever it takes to plant the seed of love in their children. Fathers teach their children to be discipline and to learn proper manners. In the article it says, “Fathers are central to the emotional well-being of their children; the are capable caretakers and disciplinaries” (Source B). A century ago, it was not the man’s job to play a huge role in the children’s lives, they were just there to provide and occasionally take care of the children. However, most parents now believe that it is just as important to have a father around, as it is to have a mother. Men can offer a different way to parenting than women can, and vise versa. Fathers are excepted to have a very important leadership role that more often than not only fathers can provide. When a father is affectionate, helpful, and drawn in with his children, it is proven to help the child’s self-esteem as long as further develop the
Family programs for many years focused on helping the mother and children overcome violence, any kind of abuse and many other issues that could have conflicted within their family. Since the beginning of time, fathers have had a profound effect on their child’s development. Over the years, the norm for traditional family dynamics of having a father figure in the household has changed drastically, and so did the roles of the parents. It is not as common as it used to be to have a father or father figure in the home. In this day and age, women are more likely to raise children on their own and gain independence without the male assistance due to various reasons. The role of a father in his child’s life extends past the knowledge of far too many, and can oftentimes be eclipsed by the role of the mother. Although the mother’s role is essential and greatly valued in a child’s life and development, the father plays a significant role as well. No mother can fill the father’s place in a child’s heart, for fathers nurture and play differently than a mother. Several studies show that an attendant and highly involved father is critical, especially in the early stages of a child’s life. The absence of a father during this stage can lead to “impaired social and behavioral abilities in adults” (Robert, 2013). But what is the role of the father? This paper discusses the role of the expectant father, the birth experience for him, the transition into fatherhood, and the rise of single fathers.
