Nothing would be the same today if society hadn’t experienced its most unprecedented transformation that transpired during the 1920’s. This famous decade later on came to be known as the roaring twenties. It got its name as a result of the epidemic that changed the country from a nation of conservancy into a nation of diversification. One of the reasons for this epidemic came through the use of fashion. This alteration occurred essentially in large cities towards the western side of the country, like New York. It wasn’t until further on that the southern areas merged into the new customs as well. With a drastically diverse innovation in fashion to express power, wealth, and self-determination going on, the 1920’s became the era of change for society’s view on lifestyle.
Finery was the culminating way for individuals to display their prosperity. Rich men were normally seen in suits of the best fabric, giving them a strong professional introspection. Men like this automatically gained more respect than men of the lower class because the classier they looked, the more intimidating they became in the eyes of others. Women who wore excessive jewelry and extravagant outfits tended to stand out, making them more desired by men and envied by other women. Author Elizabeth Hurlock described that fashion reflects how a person is viewed by society (Themes in American History). She also stated, “One of the chief values of clothing is that it enables people to advertise themselves in a way that will win the attention and admiration of others” (Themes in American History). Their style was introduced in the early 1910s but did not spark until the 1920s. The style was said to be more comfortable, but was not appealing to the more conservative. Before the change of style, most women were dressed modestly; however, women's fashion in the 1920s showcased a more “boyish” and comfortable, look which led to huge controversy and affects how women dress today. Although to society now, these changes may not be seen as a big deal, back then it would split society.

Women of the 1920's Women during the 1920's lifestyle, fashion, and morals were very different than women before the 1920's. Flappers became the new big thing after the 19th amendment was passed. Women's morals were loosened, clothing and haircuts got shorter, and fashion had a huge role in these young women. Women before the 1920's were very different from the women of the Roarin' 20's. Gwen Hoerr Jordan stated that the ladies before the 1920's wore dresses that covered up most of their skin, had pinned up long hair, were very modest, had chaperones and had men make all of their decisions (1).
The 1920’s was an era of dramatic political and cultural change, where many Americans lived in cities rather than farms. Many inventors came to be noticed as new cars were invented and as music entered the entertainment industry. A new style of music was invented mainly in the African American community, creating the Harlem Renaissance; which was an evolution of music and entertainment in Harlem, New York City. The women of America began to evolve in the 1920s, adding new styles to our fashion industry and changing the way women dress, act, and are portrayed in society for generations. Women were viewed before the 1920’s as innocent housewives, who made little to no money, as they often relied on their husbands’ income.

The time period known as the Roaring 20’s was filled with a lot of changes and exciting times. Every age and gender were affected by this era. Many of the changes during this time are still in place today. From courting and dating, the etiquette of women, to the changing of our education. Multiple things from the 1920’s are still being used today in our everyday life; from jobs to clothing to careers.

If it weren't for the 1920's, the United States today would be quite different. The Jazz Age helped influence the clothing and music we love today. Flappers, believe it or not played a major role in the evolution of women’s fashion. Although alcohol was illegal, gangsters and bootleggers found illegal ways to supply it to people. The use of credit is still used today but the whole concept of it has become more organized and efficient over time. When people think of the 1920s they think of the great depression. What people don’t know is that twenties were much more than the depression. The 1920s were one of Americas most prosperous eras. This era brought peace, new technology, inventions, new dances, flappers, entertainment, prohibition and much more. The twenties have been described in many ways including the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz age and the era of wonderful nonsense. The name that best illustrates this time period is the era of wonderful nonsense because the crazy fads.
Changes in the women’s view point of the 20s were less looked down upon as they were for men. Where what we say is limited to using words without slang or not having the same music we have today. Those brave youth who broke the traditional view of life made our great society what it is today.
Women used to dress very conservatively and strict before the turn of the decade. Clothing consisted of fitted dresses, long skirts, and corsets in lady like manners. Since the 1920’s brought women’s rights along, young women decided that they were not willing to waste away their young lives anymore being held down to the rules; they were going to enjoy life. The younger generations of women were breaking away from their old habits and their fashion statements changed their roles in society completely. In conclusion, Fashion will always transcend throughout the ages. Fashion is a form of expression, an art form if you will. The 1950’s will always be a foundation for the fundamentals of fashion. What someone has created will repeat itself in history, even if it unknowingly was a symbol meant for prosperity when in this day and age it stands for
