The Impact of Choices on Spirituality in Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha

A person's life choices will affect their spirituality and their inner-being as they continue on through life. Their choices lead them down different paths, which in time will affect their spirituality, positivity, and their happiness. The novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, illustrates Siddhartha's spiritual journey and path to enlightenment. Siddhartha’s journey will bring him closer to his inner spirit. Siddhartha's life clearly displays how a person's daily choices affect their spirituality.

“Spirituality: the quality or state of being spiritual", spirit meaning: "a life-giving force" or "a force within a person held to endow the body with life, energy, and power: soul" (Britannica School) “Your soul is the whole world” (Hesse 7). Siddhartha continuously speaks about his inner spirit, and constantly wants to reach his goal of becoming one with the spirit, to achieve enlightenment. He wants the ability to live life fully and to feel power over his mind and body. Many people share this common desire of wanting to be one with their soul, to feel power over their body, and to feel happiness. A person’s daily choices will alter their desires. When a person begins to make decisions that do not push them forward, they will start to stray from their spirit.

Choice is defined as "the act of choosing: selection" or "power of choosing: option", choosing means to "select according to preference especially after consideration" (Britannica School). When a person has a right to choose, they have a right to decide for their self, they have the option to choose right or wrong. People make simple decisions such as choosing to eat fruit instead of junk food and to walk to work instead of taking public transportation. These choices lead to a healthier mind, body, and soul. A person who chooses to eat healthy will not regret it in the future, while someone who frequently eats fast food will regret it because his or her body will be unhealthy. These simple daily choices lead us down millions of different paths that have millions of other paths branching off of them. People who exercise and eat healthy frequently feel good about themselves; this brings them closer to their spirit. It provides them with happiness and energy and clearly shows that a person’s decisions can impact their spirituality.
