Katherine Mansfield’s Miss. Brill written in 1920 is a short story a part of Mansfield’s The Garden Party and Other Stories. It is a short story about a middle-aged teacher, who finds joy in spending her Sunday afternoons, sitting in the park. At the park, she finds joy in observing others around her and pretending, they are all actors and actresses on a stage. Miss. Brill finds joy in the illusion that she creates at the park. She is a woman, who lives a very humdrum life and finds joy creating an unrealistic world, where she envisions herself as an actress. She uses illusion as not only an escape from her reality but also from herself. Miss. Brill creates an illusion in order to escape the reality that she is losing her youth. Although, Miss. Brill is knowledgeable of the world, where she imagines that she isn’t really an actress, she continues to spend her Sunday afternoons in the park where she has created an unrealistic world for herself. In the illusion that Miss. Brill creates to escape the reality that she is losing her youth, she tries to preserve reminders of her youth such as the fur. During her afternoons, in the park, Miss. Brill chooses to wear her fur. The fur for her is a reminder of her past. It is a reminder of the days when she was younger. It makes her feel good to wear the fur because of the memories it brings back to her. She states, “Dear little thing! It was nice to feel it again” (Mansfield 1). She cherishes the fur and is very fond of it perhaps because of the memories she has created during the times when she wore it. The fur reminds her of her youth. It is the reason that she has kept it in her possession for so long. The fur is a symbol of her youth. She has managed to keep the fur despite aging. Brill can actually be examine as very hypocritical because not only does she often make impolite statements about other people in the park but she isn’t exactly the nicest person because she spends her Sunday afternoons, listening to other people’s conversations. She gets a thrill out of eavesdropping on other’s conversation and when they aren’t interesting enough to her, she becomes annoyed with them and hopes that they leave. Mansfield after a more in-depth analysis makes the reader evaluates the sympathy that is felt for Miss. Brill. Once the illusion are taken away and she is evaluate for the person that she is in reality, it is found that she is not just a bored woman, who enjoys afternoons in the park.

She does not admit her feelings of dejection at the end. She seems not even to notice her sorrow. Miss Brill is concerned merely with the external events, and not with internal emotions. Furthermore, Miss Brill is proud. She has been very open about her thoughts. However, after the comments from the young lovers, her thoughts are silenced. She is too proud to admit her sorrow and dejection; she haughtily refuses to acknowledge that she is not important.
Miss Brill is a story about an old woman who lacks companionship and self-awareness. She lives by herself and goes through life in a repetitive manner. Each Sunday, Miss Brill ventures down to the park to watch and listen to the band play. She finds herself listening not only to the band, but also to strangers who walk together and converse before her. Her interest in the lives of those around her shows the reader that Miss Brill lacks companionship.
In this story the interpretation of Miss Brill's character is revealed through her observation of other people. The story starts out as Miss Brill with Miss Brill describing the sensation of her fur coat upon her skin and how it made her feel. The setting takes place on a bustling Sunday afternoon in the center of a town. Miss Brill has made it a routine for her to go out on these Sunday afternoons dressed up at her finest, and go people watching.
In reality, Miss Brill is a part of nothing. She sits alone on a bench with her ratty old fur and watches the world pass before her. She sees other people sitting on benches Sunday after Sunday and thinks of them as "funny...odd, silent, nearly all old...as though they'd just come from dark little rooms." Rather than see herself as one of them, she creates a fantasy world to escape facing the truth. Even in this seemingly perfect production, within Miss Brills mind, Mansfield shows us that there is the possibility of evil. Along come the "hero and heroine" of Miss Brills imagination and the nasty truth cuts like a knife. The young couple begin to ridicule and make fun of the "stupid, old, lonely lady that no body wants," and in that instant her dream is demolished and little world crumbles.

The story starts with the "trotting" of Miss Meadows in the hall and "the girls of all ages, rosy from the air, and bubbling over with that gleeful excitement that comes from running to school on a fine autumn morning, hurried, skipped, fluttered by" (pg 1, line 3-5).
