CONTEXT
IDEO, one of the worlds largest and most successful product development firms often gathered here and talked. David Kelly, the head and founder of IDEO gathered his thoughts with Boyle.
Boyle had just led his group at IDEO through the development of 3Com’s palm V handheld computer which designers and managers at both firms already considered a successful product with a very large comercial potential. Athought working on the palm V challenged IDEO’s engineering skills, working with handspring promised to challenge the very manner in which it operated, i.e. the principle of getting all team members to “fail often to succeed sooner” a creative process that often looked to outsiders like spinning wheels. The IDEO philosophy melded californian iconoclism with a genuine respect for new ideas and inventions. IDEO came to national prominence when ABC’s nightline illustrated its innovation process by showing its designers re-engineer a decade’s old icon, the supermarket shopping cart in just 5 days. Now Boyle had to decide whether he should suggest to handsprings management to add more time to a development schedule that was less then half of what it took to design the stunningly beautiful and palm V.
History:
In 1975, Kelly joined the stanford university program in product design throught part-time consulting experience he found to his surprise that most consulting firms consisted of specialist with tecnological companies lacking clear access to a general product development firm. IDEO started in 1991 when David Kelly’s design merged with two companies ID 2 led by renowned designer Bill Moggridge and Matrix started by Mike Nuttall.
IDEO thus pioneered the design version of concurrent engineering. A fusiono of heart in enginee...

Why has IDEO been so innovative over the years?
1. Rapid prototyping
Three “R’s” : rough, rapid, and right Enlightened trial and error
2. Effective brainstorming
Stay focused on the topic
Encourage wide ideas
Defer judgment to avoid interrupting the flow of ideas
Build on the ideas of others
Go for quantity and be visual
Practice brainstorming with frequency, intensity, and sincerity
3. Well-honed product development process ( refer to Attc. 1 ) Get clients actively involved
Suggestion:
Business leaders must change how they think about innovation and must change how their company cultures reflect that thinking. Innovation can be bolstered anywhere if people are given opportunities and rewards for taking good ideas. Innovations are a matter of taking developed ideas and applying them in new situations.

All leaders start somewhere in life, whether if it’s in a garage or in the basement working with dad. There is the, one-and-only leader who took innovation through his own ideas. This leader took steps beyond his wildest dreams. This immense leader was demoted from his own company. Many say his ego got in the way of true life and visions, but this leader is the seed to the blueprints of ideas that he had created visions of a leading company. This leader created a legacy; he is the action of a revolutionary breakthrough.

In terms of individual work performance, the entire staff is trained and encouraged to innovate and to contribute ideas to the firm’s product development processes. That way, the culture succeeds in facilitating rapid innovation, which is at the heart of the business.
IDEO’s success is due primarily to its customer-friendly design concept of focusing on what the customer wants. These design concepts have propelled IDEO into a widely recognized, forward thinking design and development organization. IDEO designs products, services, and digital apparatuses. The firm has created over 4,000 projects for various organizations such as, Japan’s NEC, Dancell of Denmark, Procter and Gamble, USA, Pepsi Co, USA. Jonathan Ive was born in February 1967 in Chingford of England. When he was a child, he always interested in making things, he used to take apart radios and cassette recorders and then try to put them back again. Ive has been see as a hard working and creative person among his colleges. In one of the press interview, Ive said that he choose computer design while everybody in that time choose car design, because he loves and wants more challenges. The computer has many opportunities for designer to put in, many new technology for designer to innovated, so the opportunities as well as the challenges are endless. Beside the challenging and hard-working personalities, Ive is a creative person as well. He always tried to find the true appeal of the product he is designing, and usually ignored the traditional approach of design. The way he thinks and apply to his design can be called "out of the box", which also mean creative. Ive inspiration can comes from anywhere, from a gumdrop candy to the first iMac, or a water drop to the iMac's mouse, and even the iPod is like a cigarette pack of those who addicted to music instead of cigarette.
Innovation can be a competitive edge that helps small businesses to stand out in the market, but it doesn’t work on its own. Being innovative is about doing something in a different way to make it better and more productive.
The research by the Institute of Management goes on to say that a majority of executives favoured a model of leadership in which the leaders main role is to create a sense of purpose and a central vision or set of goals, and then help bring out the potential of others around them to achieve such goals (Institute of Management 2001). In times of economic change where there is a run down of the old structure of commerce, new fields of commerce are sought, in part, by innovation. Innovation can be seen as the "successful exploitation of new ideas" (The Scottish Office, 1996). To help exploit new ideas we need inspiring leaders.
Management and managers have the power to either hurt or help innovation by virtue of the very definition of management and of what managers do. Managers aren’t really the one in charge of leading change: instead they’re the ones making sure that all activities stay well controlled in order to meet specific changes. As Berkun explains, “Professional management was born from the desire to optimize and control, not to lead waves of change… The goal was to minimize chance, optimize performance, and take control away from individuals” (Berkun, 2010, p.100). Essentially, what this describes is a management process which focuses on safety and control towards well timed, well-administered goal. In such cases managers ensure that staff members stay on task and that all actions help move towards both group and individualized objectives. This sort of protocol is not what breeds originality or uniqueness of thought; rather, it creates a scenario where things are safe and actions are repetitive. For example, management is often in place to ensure that workers are productive on the assembly-line, but such productivity doesn’t breed the invention and sense of daring that great ideas are born from.
Innovative leaders need to have so common characteristics that includes good communication skills, being able to motivate others and making a good work environment, collaborating with others well, taking a real vested interest in supporting, mentoring and developing other team members (2010). Innovative leadership gives leaders the ability to create a creative working environment, which make employees feel part of the organization and it culture. The best leadership that will suite organization depending on their needs for improvement is innovative leadership this is where an employee put their creative skills and knowledge to use and feel a part of the organization. This improve job satisfaction and job performance excels and make an employee more motivate and where absenteeism is very

As regarded by a growing body of researchers, Gunday (2011) also explains organizational innovation as a catalyst of growth in business and economy. Luecke & Katz (2003, p.2) refers to innovation as ‘the introduction of a new thing or method. Innovativeness refers to ‘a firm's capacity to engage in new enterprise, that is, the introduction of new processes, products, or ideas in the organization' (2004, p. 429). This capacity to innovate is among the most important factors which influences the business performance and as such, innovativeness is amongst the unique beliefs which is surrounded in the tangible and intangible resources leading a firm towards successful business
