Conquering of Fear
For as long as I could remember I have had a chronic fear of crashes at high speeds and that my best friend Joseph has never feared anything. He would jump off the Eiffel Tower if he got the chance. On the day that I would finally conquer my fear I was in the back seat of Joseph’s uncle’s Ford Expedition with the whole seat to myself. If I were to turn my head around I would see the large speeder boat the car was pulling behind it. We were on our way to the Delta Marina. Our plan was to go tubing in the water. The only way we would end our turn on the tube was by flipping over and crashing into the water.
The road began to get rocky and the smell of wet wood was in the air. We finally reached
the loading point for cars with boats. It was not until I was sitting in the boat with my life vest on and I could feel the swaying of the marina water that I realized how scared I was. I was shaking slightly, my palms were soaked with sweat and suddenly I felt as if I had to go to the bathroom very desperately and the engine had not even been turned on yet.
I sat in the very back of the boat facing the front. When I saw Joseph’s uncle put the key in the ignition I almost instinctively grabbed the closest thing to my hand. To my surprise I had grabbed Joseph’s arm who had sat adjacent to me. I recoiled with great embarrassment. Joseph said joshingly, “Oh Adam I didn’t know you felt that way.” Then he laughed, but I was too caught up in my mistake to laugh or even notice the engine had turned on. The sudden acceleration surprised me so much I almost fell off right away.
It took a few seconds, but I got use to the speed and even began to find a peace in the
wind and the sound it made as it rushed by my ears. I sat in a very scholarly position with my hands folded and my back straight up. I looked over at Joseph and saw him in a reclining position with one hand holding a soda and the other hanging out the side of the boat feeling the water that the boat pushed up in large cascades as it cut through the once calm currents.
The Dangers of Fear Irish Playwright, George Bernard Shaw, once said, “The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them; that's the essence of inhumanity.” Inhumanity is mankind’s worst attribute. Every so often, ordinary humans are driven to the point where they have no choice but to think of themselves. One of the most famous examples used today is the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night demonstrates how fear is a debilitating force that causes people to lose sight of who they once were.
To Markowitz, the CAPM model operates in an environment where all investors have vague assets, all investors are peril antagonistic minded, no taxes, inflation or transactions cost are added to securities purchased. Nobody likes a risky investment with a 50 percent possibility so investors look for securities with low risk and high returns. Risk free assets can be assets purchased from the government such as treasury bills and corporate bonds. In finance, the market risk is usually represented with the quantity beta (β). The beta measures the value of risk in a portfolio using the market value as a benchmark, also called the beta
...grace or change for the grandmother and The Misfit stands out even more at the end. Foreshadowing did help the reader learn that bad things could happen, but it was a surprise to discover that the grandmother, who extols her southern ideals and religious morals on others throughout the entire trip, finally realizes that her way is not the only way.
...He is still anchored to his past and transmits the message that one makes their own choices and should be satisfied with their lives. Moreover, the story shows that one should not be extremely rigid and refuse to change their beliefs and that people should be willing to adapt to new customs in order to prevent isolation. Lastly, reader is able to understand that sacrifice is an important part of life and that nothing can be achieved without it. Boats are often used as symbols to represent a journey through life, and like a captain of a boat which is setting sail, the narrator feels that his journey is only just beginning and realizes that everyone is in charge of their own life. Despite the wind that can sometimes blow feverishly and the waves that may slow the journey, the boat should not change its course and is ultimately responsible for completing its voyage.
In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor, we get an image of a mid-eighteenth century post war family from O’Connor’s well rounded use of literary devices. This family is taking a vacation from their home in Atlanta, Georgia to Florida, but in the midst of their callowness, find themselves not only on the road to Florida, but on their way to find themselves… at death’s front door.
However, things aren’t always as they seem. As a grandmother, she uses her calming nature to prevent the Misfit from hurting her beloved family. Unfortunately, due to his evil nature, the Misfit has the family killed by his gang of goons. As Stephan Bandy says, “The Grandmother’s role as a grace-bringer is by now a received idea, largely because the author said it is so” (Bandy 3). Bandy then says, “At her moment of extremity, the Grandmother lurches desperately from one strategy to another not quite admitting to herself that The Misfit will kill her just as casually as he has killed the rest of her family” (Bandy 5). At the end, evil pulls through and wins to take the victory. The Misfit wins and the good falls down into dismay and

The grandmother receives what Catholics call a “moment of grace.” Grace fills the grandmother with a supernatural love and understanding that helps her to see The Misfit as a fellow suffering human being whom she is obligated to love. At that very moment she receives divine grace that transforms both her and The Misfit. Jesus has commanded us all to love others as we love ourselves, including our enemies. It is in this view that the grandmother realizes that she, as a human being is inclined toward evil, pettiness, and selfishness. She could never have come to such selfless love without God’s grace. It is at the end that she tells The Misfit, “You’re one of my own children!” She then realizes that The Misfit is one of her children, in the sense that we are all God’s children, and that if she practiced what she preached, maybe this situation would have ended
