I Now Pronounce You Man and Wife

“Will you marry me?” These four words can change a person’s life. They can begin a life and they can also end a life. What is marriage exactly? The dictionary defines marriage as any close or intimate association or union. There are more people afraid of this kind of commitment today than there were years ago. Then again, there are those who think marriage is something to do because you’re bored. It’s a joke to them. Being a stand believer of the ethics of marriage, its value is something to be cherished. A personal definition defines marriage as “a commitment, partnership, ‘till death do us part” (Sanchez). Lou Sanchez, an 80 year old woman, raised three children alone. Lou and Andrew were married for 18 years before Andrew passed away from a horrible accident. This might be shocking news, but Lou, since then, has not remarried. She believed that Andrew was the only man for her. For that reason, she decided to raise her children alone and remain a widow. (Sanchez) Another point of view would be, “getting married is not worth the trouble, damaging, it can destroy lives” (Hernandez). Rick Hernandez, a 37 year old man who has never been married nor does he ever want to, feels that marriage is a waste of time. Rick has been in love before, but he believes that people don’t need to get married to express this love. Instead of thinking that marriage is a fundamental commitment, he feels it is just a piece of paper that legally binds you. (Hernandez) It’s funny how a union for two people can have different outcomes. Could this be because of the reasons why people decide to marry? Can these reasons predict the fate of one’s marriage?

Years ago, marriage had value and meaning. Today, marriage seems...

...vived. The couples that have made marriage work for them and the others around them. I can imagine that it isn’t easy, but anything that is easy probably isn’t worth as much. I believe this is true, in all cases. To get married and know why you did, years after you tied the knot; well, that is true love.
