Hydrogen as a Power Source
For the past millions of years we have used fossil fuels, like coal and oil to power many things we use. When the Industrial Revolution came about we ramped up production of these fossil fuels in order to keep up with the demands. In the past few hundred years we have consumed so much fossil fuel that not it is all but gone and left the environment impacted. Currently we are losing 4 billion tons of crude oil reserves and, if the rate keeps going the way it is now we could lose all our oil deposits by the year 2052. Gas deposits could be gone by the year 2060, and coal by the year 2088. Now there is a new power source making its way into things we use every day. Hydrogen is now being used to power material handlers, transportation, and power generation.
Large retail warehouses operate around the clock so they use a lot of energy to move and lift products. Lead acid batteries were used in the past but required too much recharge time and held less energy with each charge, after 2 or 3 years they needed to be replaced. Now hydrogen power is being used to power these material handlers. BMW has been implementing a new fuel platform to power the plants material handling equipment. Hydrogen fuel cells are being used to power forklifts, tuggers, and stackers. Briggs Hamilton, BMW’s environmental services manager says “This project actually avoids 1.8 million kilowatt hours per year of electricity consumption (otherwise needed) to charge batteries…. If you don’t buy that electricity, you avoid about 1,200 tons per year of CO2 emissions. The benefits of hydrogen fuel cells is that it increases productivity up to 15%, It lowers operational costs up to 30% batteries no longer need to be changed out, there is mor...

...n fuel that can be renewable. In hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen combines with oxygen in the air to create electricity. The fuel cell can run continuously and generate energy as long as hydrogen fuel is provided. The only by-products of this are heat and water. Hydrogen generators take the hydrogen from water and mix it with oxygen to produce electricity. HgeneratorsTM generates pure hydrogen directly with electrolytic separation of pure water. Hydrogen generators are available for $1000 and up.
Hydrogen will soon replace all fossil fuels when all the oil, coal, and gas are used up. Soon there will be hydrogen cars and other vehicles on the road starting as early as 2015. Forklifts and other material handlers are being used in many factories to save money and make the factories more efficient. Power generators will be available for use in about 10 years.
Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements on the earth. It can be found in the oceans as well as the atmosphere. Over the last few years, talk about the future of hydrogen power has grown from a whisper to a roar. The use of hydrogen is not just the burning of the gas, but of its use in a fuel cell. Fuel cells might be the device that causes the extinction of the internal combustion engine. A fuel cell is a device that produces electricity from a fuel and an oxidizer, a substance that combines
planet in the long run. Each source has pros and cons, but combining sources might do the trick and could possibly even save the planet. Hydrogen energy and hydroelectric energy could and would bring many benefits to New York City, New York. New York City is a great place for these two sources
for a Clean Energy Source Introduction Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution fossil fuels and oil have been our main sources of energy, and until recently that has been acceptable. After the oil crisis in the 1970’s, people began to grow concerned about the future state of our energy supplies. That culminating concern combined with the new concern of human initiated alteration of the atmospheric composition, encouraged scientists to try and come up with a new source of clean fuel that
revolution in the early nineties the mankind looks for an energy source that is clean and renewable; solution of this problem would be probably the most common thing in our life - WATER. Water consists of two chemical elements, hydrogen and oxygen. Each molecule of water consists of two hydrogen (H2) atoms and one oxygen (O) atom. Chemical binding between these three atoms is very stable and strong. Therefore, the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen is under normal circumstances very intense and generates
1. Hydrogen Economy 1.1 Introduction Coal, oil and natural gas have been at the forefront of powering the world since the industrial revolution. Whether this power is used for new technology, transport links or energy the threat that fossil fuels has on the environment is colossal. Energy availability for the masses is the main dominant challenge in the 21st century and is driven by the world’s forever increasing population and the industrialization of developing countries (Crabtree, Dresselhaus
Hydrogen fuel cells are a source of alternative energy. With no negative effects on the environment, they could become extremely popular. A hydrogen fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to create water and energy. These simple energy source’s only drawback is how explosive the hydrogen gas inside is. Discussing with corporate manager, Andrew Dicks, we look into possible solutions and benefits for hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cells are an alternative source of energy. Unlike fossil fuels
The Future of Hydrogen Fuel Cells The present global economy is nearly entirely dependent on petroleum and crude oil imports from the Middle East. Where the current situation stands now, oil prices will continue to skyrocket and the environmental impact will continue becoming greater if no form of alternative energy is implemented to a greater extent within the coming years. However, to this effect, the industrial cost of producing such forms of alternative energy is in itself primarily composed
was successfully able to power his dune buggy using only tap water. He estimated in the report that to travel from Los Angeles to New York it would only take approximately 22 gallons of water (Robinson, n.d). Thus, shouldn’t we develop Stanley Meyer’s technology to fuel our lives? This paper discusses how cars can use hydrogen to create power, how they are eco-friendly, the car companies and the Department of Energy (DOE), the limiting conditions and life of a hydrogen car, and the science behind
plans for a hydrogen-powered car in his State of the Union address in January, he proposed $1.2 billion in spending to develop a revolutionary automobile that will be "pollution-free." The new vehicle, he declared, will rely on "a simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen" to power a car "producing only water, not exhaust fumes." Within 20 years, the president vowed, fuel-cell cars will "make our air significantly cleaner, and our country much less dependent on foreign sources of oil." By
water into hydrogen and oxygen by methods for an electric ebb and flow. Electrolysis is important because it is used for making fertilizers, being made to be able to fuel cars. Right now it is used to fuel rockets but soon our cars will be able to use it as everyday fuel and extracting metals. In the study of electrolysis education.com did some research and an experiment on it. This experiment took place in 2006. They found that baking soda was a good source to add to the water so the hydrogen and oxygen
into alternate energy research with hydrogen as the front runner. This is free money companies are receiving to research and develop hydrogen-powered vehicles. It's no wonder why people are lured into the hydrogen revolution. Each type of alternate energy comes with its own pros and cons. Like any product, the marketers will only mention the pros of the product they are selling and the cons of their competitors. In the end whoever has the most money, wins. Hydrogen powered vehicles have received the
that and to rely on renewable, cleaner sources of energy. The main source of energy for the world should be alternative energy instead of energy from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are energy that is in the form of coal, oil, or natural gas that comes from organisms from millions of years ago. The cycle to create fossil fuels takes millions of years to form and is therefore considered a nonrenewable resource of energy. Fossil fuels have been the primary source of energy for man ever since the age of
Hydrogen: the Fuel of the Future? The Problem: For years, United States citizens have been using natural gases and oils to power their cars. While doing so we have also been polluting our environment, making ourselves dependant on other regions of the world, and depleting our oil reserves. Rory Sporrows of “Geographical” wrote, “The car is responsible for combusting eight million barrels of oil every day, contributing to nearly a quarter of total global greenhouse emissions and causing major
Sustainable Energy Sources Energy is life. Life on this planet depends upon a fixed amount of energy. The modern industrialized energy sources such as coal and petroleum were originally utilized for their seeming promiscuity and high energies yielded per unit volume. The world has now become painfully aware of how finite petroleum reserves are, not to mention the political complications associated with being dependent upon foreign countries for an energy supply. To add insult to injury, the
of designing and developing a teaching aid that uses hydrogen to power a mechanical device. This task led us to the construction of a hybrid fuel cell/battery-powered model hovercraft. The hovercraft, which we call “Hovercraftica”, uses a battery to power the lift fan and two hydrogen fuel cells to power the fan that provides thrust. Hovercraftica is a self-contained demonstration unit with every aspect of its propulsion onboard. The hydrogen for the fuel cells is produced through the electrolysis
