Imagine sitting in your room, and on the phone. Maybe you are playing a game, like Angry Birds, or Cookie Clicker. Out of the blue, a hurricane rips apart your newly built house! Hurricanes can be deadly, and can cause a lot of damage if attention is not paid. “Anyone who says that they’re not afraid at the time of a hurricane is either a fool, a liar, or a little bit of both”-Anderson Cooper . Mr. Cooper is not alone on that quote. Natural disasters affect hundreds of thousands of people each year. People prepare in advance, and warnings are given. Natural disasters can destroy buildings, cars, and even whole towns! Hurricanes are a type of natural disaster. Hurricanes form over water, preferably warm water that is at least 26 degrees Celsius and form near the equator . These are huge spinning storms which bring strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, and even tornados. Before it becomes a hurricane, it starts as a body of air when the atmospheric pressure is lower than the surrounding air, resulting in these beasts. Hurricanes spin counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and clockwise in the southern hemisphere . Hurricanes are also classified into categories that range from 1-5 on the Saffir- Simpson scale. Category 1 hurricanes are the weakest, at 119-153 kph winds. Category 2 hurricanes range from 154-177 kph winds. Category 3 and above are considered major hurricanes, which inflict incredible damage to the landscape, forestry, and lives. Category 3 hurricanes range from 178 to 208 kph winds. Category 4 hurricanes go from 209-251 kph winds. The ocean itself nourished the fledgling storm, for all hurricanes derive their energy from the evaporation of water from the ocean surface. The wind itself powered the hurricane, as all parents seek to raise their children above themselves. With such sustenance, the cyclone swiftly deepened Longshore. Yet as all younglings do, the hurricane drifted away from its progenitors.
In 1992, hurricane Andrew was a category four hurricane and said to be one of the worst natural disasters to happen in the United States at the time. It’s winds surpassed 160 miles per hour and caused damage to over 125,000 homes within 400 square miles. Hurricane Andrew left approximately 175,000 families and children temporarily homeless.
Most of the destructions from the events of August 29th 2005, when Katrina Hit the City Of New Orleans, were not only caused by the storm itself; but also, by failure of the engineering of the levee system protecting the entire infrastructure of the city. The years of poor decision making and avoidance of the levee system led to one of the most catastrophic events in the history of the United States. Throughout our research, we have identified three key players in charge of the levee system design, construction and maintenance. These three organizations are the Unites States Corps of Engineers, the New Orleans Levee District and the Louisiana Department of Transportation. The consequences of the hurricane showed the organizations negligence in the design, construction and maintenance of the protective walls. Later independent sresearch showed that more than 50 levees and food walls failed during the passage of the hurricane. This failure caused the flooding of most of New Orleans and all of ST. Bernard Parish. The Unites States Corps of Engineers had been in charge of the of the levee system and flood walls construction since the 1936 flood act. According to the law, the Louisiana Department of Transportation is in charge to inspect the overall design and engineering practices implemented in the construction of the system. Once the levee systems were finished, they were handed over to the New Orleans Levee District for regular maintenance and periodically inspections. The uncoordinated actions of these three agencies resulted in the complete failure of a system that was supposed to protect the people of New Orleans. The heat causes the air to rise and form lower pressures in a feedback loop, making the hurricane stronger. On August 29, 2005, the third strongest and biggest hurricane ever recorded in American history hit the Gulf Coast at eight o’clock a.m. The interaction between a tropical depression and a tropical wave created a tropical storm later referred to as Hurricane Katrina (FAQS, 2013). Forming over the Bahamas, Hurricane Katrina gradually strengthened as it moved closer and closer to the Gulf of Mexico. Recorded on August 28th, 2005, Katrina jumped from a category three storm to a category five storm with maximum sustained winds up to 160 miles per hour. Although other hurricanes, such as Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma, exceeded Katrina, this dominant storm was classified as the fourth most intense hurricane based its pressure capacity. Once Hurricane Katrina hit land, it was pronounced as a category four storm moving slowly. While people thought that the slow speed of this storm prevented trauma, records show that Katrina did more damage than any fast-moving storm could have ever achieved (Solanki, 2013). Katrina produced abundant debris. The debris was in such large quantity that if it was stacked together on a football field, the rubble would reach the elevation of ten and a half miles. The size of Katrina also caused 90,000 square miles to be affected. Once proclaimed a category three storm, Hurricane Katrina slowed to the speed of 155 miles per hour. On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina forced its way into New Orleans, Louisiana with winds of more than 140 mph. This storm was a strong category three when it hit New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina destroyed homes, businesses, and factories from the high winds and flooding. The devastation that the city suffered was terrible; many people lost family members young and old and also their most prized possessions. Most of all it displaced families and caused an abundance of damage to properties. Due to the costly destruction that the city of New Orleans faced after Katrina, they must now find a way to alleviate the blighted properties from their environment and also face the challenges.

Hurricanes form over the ocean. Easterly waves, what hurricanes develop from, are long, narrow regions of low pressure which occur in ocean winds called trade winds. At first, these easterly waves can grow into something called, a tropical depression. A tropical depression occurs when winds are up to 31 mph. Hurricanes are one of the deadliest and most expensive natural disasters around. They are more common in areas of humid yet moist weather so they are very foreign to certain places. But to the places were hurricanes are the norm, the people take them extremely seriously because they kill people and ruin countless amounts of property.
