The position of sports marketing professional will be obtained by someone with a degree in marketing; therefore the specific training needed to complete the duties of the job will be positioned around those objectives already learned throughout one’s past education. The following is an overview of what training actually is and it’s purpose. It also covers what training techniques will be used for a person obtaining the position of sports marketing professional for the Chicago White Sox.
Training and development are processes that attempt to provide an employee with information, skills, and an understanding of the organization and it’s goals. Before this training and development occurs one must go through an orientation to learn what the organization stands for and the type of work he or she is expected to perform. Orientation is defined as introducing new employees to the organization and to his or her new task, managers and work groups. An orientation is designed to make the person feel comfortable, knowledgeable, and ready to work within the firms culture, structure, and employee mix. The goals of orientation are to reduce anxiety, reduce turnover, save time, and develop realistic expectations. Usually the operating manager conducts the orientation.
Once an individual goes through the orientation process he/she is ready for job training. Training is known as the systematic process of altering behavior of employees in a direction that will achieve organizational goals. Some goals of the training process are training validity, transfer validity, intraorganizational validity, and interorganizational valididty.
There are several different training techniques that can be used to train individuals. On-the-job training can be an informal and formal method. The employee is placed in a real work situation and shown the job and the tricks of the trade by an experienced employee or the supervisor. One wide-spread technique is the case method, which uses a written description of a real decision-making situation in the organization. This is similar to another technique called role-playing. In this tactic you act out a case situation to train for the position. The In-Basket Technique collects materials that include typical items from a specific manager’s mail, e-mail and a telephone list. The individual is managed and critiqued on the on the number of decisions made in the time allotted, the quality of decisions, and the priorities chosen for making them.
However, before a hired employee enrolls in a training program, they must go through orientation. Orientation provides new employees with the information they will need to succeed in a company (Woods 163). Orientation helps reduces the stress of beginning a new job, gives an overview of the business, and provides the employees with the expectations within the workplace. After orientation, the employee will begin training. Training is specialized to the position that the new employee is about to enter. Training should encompass the knowledge and skills that one should know to be able to complete the day-to-day tasks. For a training program to be successful, it should include the following
The training program should be designed which covers all of its employees and they need to identify which part of its organization is bad need of training and they need to start designing its training program from that part. Due to the nature and complexity of contracts, agents are expected to have a background in contract law and be knowledgeable in finance, business management, financial and risk analysis, and of course, sports. In order to be a successful sports agent one must not only be a great negotiator, but also be highly motivated, have exceptional communication skills, be prepared to work long hours and handle multiple tasks at the same time.
Training and development is essential to employee’s retention, loyalty and overall satisfaction. When employees feel there is opportunity within a company and diversity leading the way employees pride and productivity is enhanced.
Orientation, written by Daniel Orozco, is a first-person narrative of an employee’s first day at a new job where the employee must learn the all the rules and people around the office. Orozco uses short sentences throughout the short story to illustrate the lack of job security. Orozco frequently mentions “you may be let go” (Orozco 1) upon inadequate completion of a task. The short sentences also create a theme of unrest or anxiousness evidenced when Orozco vividly describes each person in the office. Every employee has an unusual quirk that makes people uneasy.
