One thing I noticed immediately while in class was that connecting dates to their significance events was incredibly hard for me to remember. I would take diligent notes, pay close attention in class, and clarify any questions I had. But in class the very next day, I had forgotten almost everything. This made testing especially difficult. I knew I would have to come up with new, innovative methods for learning. I began trying new methods of note taking such as reorganizing them so I could connect words and numbers. For example, in English class when studying vocabulary, I would associate the definition of a word with another word that rhymed or sounded similar. I quickly realized that this was the best way for me to memorize long lists of definitions. Take the
The article “How to Be a Success” by Malcom Gladwell speaks about how success is something that can be achieved if you put the time and work into it, and how success is not achieved overnight but rather through long hours of constant practice. His article is targeted to more than one group of individuals. The groups of individuals that his article targets are teenage students, young adults, adults, people who want to become an expert, or want to succeed in something they have an interest in and in general society. Another article also related to the success of an individual “An A+ Student Regrets His Grades” by Afraj Gill describes how in society many schools focus more on students’ grades, rather than their learning, and how a student is
A goal I have for academics is to not fail any quizzes or tests. One way I can do this is to study before every quiz and test. I can do this by making a good study guide and good notes for myself. I will also ask many questions so I can so I can know all the information. If I am confused on a question, I should ask questions so I can understand what will be asked on the test. One of the most important things I need to do to help my test grade is pay attention in class. If I take plenty of notes and listen to the lesson, I will have resources to study off of so I will do well. This year, I should do well on all of my tests and quizzes as long as I study, pay attention in class, and ask plenty of questions.
I try to remember and learn everything word for word in the but and find myself getting overwhelmed. Dr.Chew explains deep learning as, “ relating new information to prior knowledge or making information personally meaningful” (Chew, How to Get the Most Out of Studying: Part 2 of 5, 2011). I find the software thepoint and the practice questions very helpful in helping me understand what I know and need to go back and review. My studying technique consist of listening to podcast, taking the NCLEX style quizzes, studying with a group, as well as reading the assigned text. When listening to the podcast I try to follow along with the book and highlight what the person speaks on and take notes from there. I use the NCLEX style quizzes to help with my anxiety of how the test will be as far as the 1 question per page style. I find is very helping at the end of the quizes, I can see the rationales and compare how and why the correct answers is such. When studying with a group we all section off specific objective and do those, come together and read over everyones answers along with looking at the page to see where we got the answers. If any one disagree we all look at the book and come up with the correct answer as well. Reading the text is my least favorite thing to do because it takes up the most time and I find myself skimming and trying to remember only key terms and words in the
Pursuing personal excellence is suppose to be a hard thing to do, but all it takes is to be proactive more often and understand instead of being understood. It's just looking at everything in a positive way, and listening and shutting up for a few days right? It can't be that hard to do, right? Just be proactive and understand instead of being understood.
An outstanding educator possesses unique qualities that set him or her apart from others in the field. Ask any student about a favorite teacher and listen intently as he or she describes that person with a smile. Ask a parent of a child who will enter first grade in the fall about the teacher choice for their child. The parent would describe the outstanding educator in their desire for that special teacher. The qualities of an outstanding educator are easily recognized by those whose lives they touch, shape, and change on a daily basis. It is in this writing piece that they will be described and discussed.
This is where you will take what you discovered about how you learn best and put it into use. Maybe previously you had been relying on your professor’s notes when you are a visual learner. This means that you will align your teacher’s notes to diagrams and pictures in your textbook. Or if none are found take the extra step and use a search engine to find related pictures or even YouTube that can provide you with videos that explain concepts and ideas related to your studies. If you are an auditory learner this might mean that you read the information out loud to yourself. If you are a kinesthetic learner perhaps reading while standing will you remember more readily or putting into practice what your book is describing. As mentioned previously, as someone who learns best by reading and writing, I hand write my own notes even if the professor has provided me with theirs, and later on I compare and contrast both sets of
As you enter the red bricked school building on the first day, you do not know who your teacher will be. It could be a tall, old, young or nasty woman or man. But you always try to make yourselves presentable, since the first impression is always the last. Some students come, sit with their heads down, and speak nothing for the period. Others just disperse in the back posting pictures on instagram of their first day of school. However the not so ordinary student introduces themselves, tells the class what they did over the summer, and starts asking teacher questions even before the teacher has taught the lesson. They stand out from the rest. By the end of the day, the teacher has already figured out who the “perfect student” is.
I’ve tried note cards and memory games, I’ve tried reading a word or phrase over and over again. None of them worked. There has been one thing that truly helped me remember things for tests, I had to write the word over and over at least five times. I would highly recommend that you try this if nothing else does. While you’re taking notes I would recommend that you right in the examples with the notes, they will help you in the long run because I guarantee you won’t remember their practical use unless you’re using it constantly. It has been said that my learning style is recommended to use charts and graphs to study too, I personally can’t use charts and graphs mostly because I can’t draw them that quickly. If you’re like me while studying, then you should listen to music and take breaks every once and
Two of the most important study skills are setting goals and taking notes. A student may set a time goal, such as studying a few hours a week; set a general goal, such as trying to study hard and stay on schedule; set a specific performance goal, such as getting at least 80% of the homework problems correct. Another important study skill is taking notes. Students generally make two kinds of mistakes in taking notes. One is to try to write down everything the instructor says, which leads to confusing notes. The other is to copy concepts that they do not understand but hope to learn by memorization. Good notes are compromised of the following: 1) written information summarized in your own words; 2) outline the important concepts; 3) try to associate the lecture notes with the material text; 4) asking yourself questions and making up questions from the notes.
Also, it is a great idea to start preparing for quizzes and tests earlier rather than later. Studying for a quiz or test the morning before is more like memorizing the information, which can put more stress on you. I found myself waiting to study till last minute at the beginning of the year, so I have started preparing for quizzes and tests the day we are told we are going to have a quiz or test in the future. To get additional problems on a certain concept, use the online book and do some of the monitoring progress problems because they give you step-by-step instructions.
This one being your first year in college, you may have trouble concentrating while you study. Some techniques that can help your concentration are being selective, relaxing, and over learning. Being selective means to make choices about what is most important to learn. When you are studying, you should be able to know what may or may not be on the test, your notes for the week can be helpful. In addition, pay attention to charts, tables, and illustrations that you think may appear on the test. Relaxing is a good technique to use because when you are relaxed you are able to absorb more information. One way to relax is to use a breathing technique (inhale, count from one to ten, and exhale, and count from one to ten, and so on). Over learning can help you fight mental vagueness. When you are struggling in a class, it is best for you to learn more than you need to know about the subject. You can use these techniques every time you are studying or when you cannot concentrate.
You can not just wake up one morning with straight A's. You have to work hard for it. Getting good grades will help you. You need to know why it is so important. You need to get good grades so that you can get into outstanding colleges. Also, if you get good enough grades, you could get scholarships from colleges. You need to get good grades because you can make your parents very proud, and it will make you feel very good about yourself to get good grades. Some people like getting excellent grades, so they can brag and be better than someone else. The point is that getting good grades is worth it. Here are a few things to help you get those good grades.
Balancing the characteristics of a good student will not only lift them out of the average student range in some of their classes, but it will also carry on through his or her adult life making a job or a career even better. Becoming an excellent student early on in one 's lifetime is the best way to learn the discipline needed because it 's something that will be pushed onto the student by the parents very young, rather than trying to teach oneself self discipline. Defining a student by their grades is not a good way to understand the student and how they are learning but watching the choices that they make in academics is the key to defining who has what it takes to proclaim the good student
