Throughout the centuries people argued on the ways to spend their free time. Ancient Greeks did sports as they believed in the unity of mind and body; medieval people dedicated their selves mostly to worshiping and labour, and people of Modern Time are known for their interest towards science and humanities. Nowadays we have such a wide range of activities to fill our leisure time with that cannot decide which way is better. Although, while searching for a better hobby, we can stick with the easiest one. For example, according to bussinessinsider.com, both unemployed and working Americans tend to spend their free time watching TV. It is scientifically proven that people satisfy with an accomplished challenge what gives them an improvement. Challenges might be a trip around the world or reading The Holy Bible for an atheist, and the essence of any challenge is getting new ideas. In order to develop ourselves fully in our free time and challenge our ideas and beliefs, we should devote leisure to one of the most popular ways to share ideas which is the arts, we should take the time to g...
Marks, L. (2006). The Loss of Leisure in a Culture of Overwork. Spirit of Change Magazine.
By citing a quotation from author Daniel Pinks who states, that the talents individuals require for success in the 21st Century are not, “linear, logical, analytic talents,” but ones that provide, “the ability to create artistic and emotional beauty, to detect patterns and opportunities,” and “to craft a satisfying narrative,” Gioia is able to build his point with the agreement of a respected individual. He then immediately follows with a statement that business leaders like to see, “imagination, creativity, and higher order thinking” as qualities for individuals in management positions. This dual utilization of claims from two separate sources conveys to Gioia’s audience the sense that the skills built through immersion in the arts are vital to succeeding in the modern workplace which aids in logically leading his audience to the conclusion that a loss of experience with the arts may foreshadow troubling
To gain a better understanding of contemporary leisure, it helps to take a look at its origins during the Classical Period. During this time, Aristotle’s teachings and philosophies were significant in not only defining leisure but also exploring its relationship within society. To better understand leisure we should look more closely at Aristotle’s definition of the word. De Grazia (1962) writes that Aristotle defined leisure as “freedom from the necessity of labor” (p.11). Aristotle believed all labor and occupation was the antithesis of leisure. The Greek translation of leisure is ‘schole.’ It is interesting to note that the Greek translation for work or occupation is ‘ascholia.’ Hence, in the Greek language, the meaning of work was essentially non-leisure. This highlights that central to Greek thought and practice was the idea of leisure and we will explore later how this concept begins to lose itself as work and society shifts.
In the late adulthood life of Roseanne she began being an example of the peripheral leisure activities in which later contracted to core leisure activities not only due to age but also to social/emotional effects. After passing through a phase of regression her activities expanded and she slightly engaged in the quality of being active.
The Greeks seemed to believe that entertainment was meant to provide a person with an outlet to relieve stress. Such an assumption would lead one to believe that the form and content of entertainment is a matter of personal choice. However, entertainment has the underlying current of influencing what is normal and acceptable in society. Furthermore, culture is affected to the point of unsavory entertainment permeating the lives of those who avoid such forms of entertainment. Entertainment is not merely a personal choice. Entertainment is an instrument of influence on society.
He said that having an analog station is very important for generating ideas and I agree. He mentions that there is something through working hands on that helps stimulate the mind and the creative process and therefore emphasizes the importance of stepping away from the computer. To continue, the importance of having and pursuing all of the passions that you have is another idea. Through the pursuance of multiple hobbies and passions the further development of your work can occur. If one passion were to be abandoned you would be left feeling empty and in result to this the improvement of your creation would be
...ified can create the most complex, yet most creative ideas, and everyone can relate with this subject because as the famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said “Music is the Universal language of mankind”. I encourage people to join a discourse community of their preference, because as it happened to me joining one of these groups might change their life. Each day people learn something new that can help them in the future and their true teachers are people who can be found in these discourse communities which can be called friends that guide them through the path of life as the writer Will Durant would say “Friends are helpful not only because they will listen to us, but because they will laugh at us; Through them we learn a little objectivity, a little modesty, a little courtesy; We learn the rules of life and become better players of the game” the game of life.
Literate arts is what makes the world more creative and everlasting with inventions. Mae Jemison once said,“The difference between science and the arts is not that they are different sides of the same coin even, or even different parts of the same continuum, but rather, they are manifestations of the same thing. The arts and science are avatar of human creativity.” Literate arts are a way for us to express ourselves; they are ways of communication such as poems, songs, or artistic works. In a transcript of literature arts Miller says that reading and writing do not determine a person’s behavior, they majorly reflect on what people are going through in life. Human life is expressed through communications; through this, people come to learn
In his book Leisure: The Basis of Culture, German philosopher Joseph Pieper provides a broader, deeper definition of leisure as the driving force behind our very existence. He points out that a common misconception regarding leisure is that it is the opposite of work. However, this cannot be true because, once our basic needs are met, is ultimately geared towards leisure. Therefore, it is in order to say that we work so that we can have leisure. As Aristotle put it in Politics, ‘leisure is the center-point about which everything revolves’. In today’s modern society, almost every human activity involves some sort of work. Pieper does not see work as just a form of occupation, but gives it an anthropological definition encompassing the whole concept of man. In his everyday life man works, and since work is about getting leisure, man’s very existence is to find leisure. His culture, way of life, is defined by leisure. BACKGROUND
In such a chaotic household, self preservation and prioritization was as much of a battle as making sure plans and schedules were convenient for the group. This means that I had to make plans days in advance, and map out my schedule around concerts, performances, boy scout ceremonies, and soccer games. When I did have time to myself, I focused on art. I didn’t have the time to take professional classes, which would have forced my parents to wedge more time into their schedules to carry me to and from lessons. Public school didn’t offer classes that took my passion seriously or worked at the pace and caliber at which I needed. With a vivid imagination I studied animated movies, Disney and Ghibli characters filled notebooks. I doodled
Ways of entertainment was changed a lot over that past few centuries. Nowadays, people rely on television or their cell phones to keep them entertained. Hundreds of years ago, however, those things didn’t exist. It is very important to know what they did to entertain themselves back then to see how far we have come in ways of entertainment. A specific time period that was very important to discovering new ways of entertainment was the renaissance. Entertainment was a very significant part of the renaissance.
Anna Quindlen writes about how to foster creativity in children, and by extension adults by doing nothing and allowing their minds to foster creativity during this time, free time. She expresses her thoughts in “Doing nothing is something” a short essay. Quindlen proposes that kids are too busy and do not have enough free time. In this down time or free time they make their own adventures and form their own ideas. She presents the idea that to even start the creative process to create literature, music, and art one must have free time to let the mind wonder and create. On a moment’s reflection, the thesis that Quindlen presents looks sound but she does not allow for a person can think creatively without down time.
Creativity and imagination are undoubtedly at the top of the life. This trait is helpful as when doing projects in class and beyond that require creativity, I feel right at home. Recently in English class, we had to complete a project on allusions and their specific meanings. I found this to be quite intriguing because I was able to decorate the project and made it personal to me. This will help me in maintaining independence because when I get to college or eventually enter the workforce, I will more than likely have to do certain projects which require my creativity. Additionally, I enjoy creating art, learning more about it, and to make things that I feel express who I am as a person. Last year, I finally got to be in an actual art class; moreover, I got to create art about what I wanted and not do it for something or someone else. I know that this will help me in life, because if I’m doing something for me and not for someone else, I will feel more passionate about it which will help further my
R. Howard Bloch once stated, “The humanities are an incredible source of practical information about the world around us”. The study of humanities has affected the life of every individual to walk the earth at some point in time; It seems sort of outrageous but it’s true. From art and literature to architecture and music, the humanities is present in our everyday lives. Its importance is often underestimated but in reality, it is extremely important to our existence. In fact, before entering my first humanities class I didn’t realize how important or interesting humanities was. After learning about how art, specifically, has changed over time, I find myself eager to learn more. The benefits of studying humanities includes: aiding individuals
