Cosmetic Companies continuously advertise through the media for their benefit; however, these advertisements negatively impact the viewers. Different types of media serve different purposes based on their aim, which influences viewer’s perception. For example, advertisements are designed to convince audience into purchasing products whereas news articles, despite being prejudiced, are written to inform people. This concludes, that media in different forms can represent companies both positively and negatively. This essay will compare the representation of cosmetic companies in the “Blushing Beauty” advertisement by Jane Irdale with the news article “Girls aged five worry about their body image, say MPs” by Rebecca Smithers. To compare both media forms, this essay will examine the way in which perspectives, language and images are used to position the audience. The advert constructs a positive representation of cosmetic companies’ whereas the article states that cosmetic advertisements are the cause of Body dissatisfaction in society.
In addition, both media texts integrate certain perspectives to serve the purpose they aim to achieve. While the advertisement persuades the audience to buy cosmetic products, the news report is written to clarify that negative body image is initiated by cosmetic advertisements. By transmitting an unrealistic beauty ideal, the “Blushing Beauty” advert stereotypes young Women. However, in most cases even men are affected. Furthermore, the newspaper report contains oppositions to cosmetic companies, similarly, the advertisement symbolizes Jane Irdales’ perspective. After analysing and comparing both media sources, it is clear that the perspectives, language and images of the media texts, play a major role in reflecting its purpose to the viewers. Although both media texts serve totally different purposes, there are still some similarities relating to their topic “blushing beauty” and Body dissatisfaction. In conjunction with the media tools, it is clear that over time the media has become more and more provocative. This also makes it clear that, the pressure to achieve an unrealistic "body ideal" is now an underlying cause of serious health and relationship problems. However, to avoid body dissatisfaction from spreading further in society, cosmetic advertisements must use more realistic images.
