The world around us is constantly changing and technology has a lot of impact on the rapid changes. This is one of the reasons why it is hard to give a specific definition of the word literacy. Literacy can be broken down into two main subcategories: literate and illiterate. One of the main discussions with this is what qualifications or qualities separate someone who is literate from someone who is illiterate. Historians have been researching literacy for the past five decades and have been trying to come up with a fixed definition of the word. James Paul Gee defines discourse as “a socially accepted association among ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or ‘social network’” in his article What is Literacy (1). After defining discourse, Gee compared the word to an “identity kit”. A person’s identity is subsidized into social and personal identity and social identity is broken down even further into type (characteristics) and role (actions). A person might have to take on different roles throughout their life and therefore their social identity may change. Just as the world around us and definition of the word literacy changes and evolves, so do people 's discourses. Technology has empowered people and allowed them to become what they consider to be literate. Context and interpretation both play important roles in the definition of literacy. Context dictates the literacy and identity of the situation and how people interpret different discourses changes the definition of literacy. A person can be literate in one culture and not to another, but the many phases of literacy went through this cycle and ended up close to where it started. The formation and base of literacy started with hieroglyphics and although it went through a lot of different phases and is more complex now than it was back then, we are basically back to hieroglyphics. An example of how we have reverted back to the start of literacy and communication is the advancement in technology that lead to idea of emoticon pictures of people 's faces which represent feelings, and other characters used in texting today. Communicating this way leaves the message up for interpretation, which is how illiteracy came about. Interpretation can lead to misinterpretation and both of these things change the definition of literacy. We can misinterpret what message our friend is trying to get across when they send us a variety of emoji’s, just as many of us misinterpreted the meaning of the hieroglyphics that were on the pyramids when we tried to interpret them in class. Writing has allowed clarification and specifications, but it is not the only part of literacy and it might not even be around today if it wasn’t for the people of the past who same have the nerve to call
