An Inspector Calls How, and why, does Priestley make An Inspector Calls tense, dramatic and interesting? An Inspector Calls is a well known play written by English dramatist J.B Priestley in 1945, set in 1912 just after World War I, and just before the start of voyage of The Titanic but performed 1946 in the United Kingdom. The play is about how an 'Inspector' arrives at the Birling family at Brumley (a fictional city) to discuss how a young girl named Eva Smith (also known as Daisy Renton) killed herself by drinking disinfectant. Inspector Goole tries to show the family that all of them a partially responsible for Eva Smith/Daisy Renton's death. The Edwardian time was an era where there was no equality; the disparity between the social class was the main division between mankind. Equality was not the same between men and the women, the men were more powerful-they had their say and had more rights (voting) over the women. Money was also divided. Women’s wages were half of what the men had earned. Equality was not the only issue in the society, the other events that were occurring was the Russian Revolution and poverty. Poverty relates to Mr Birling as that is how he made his profit by cheap labour, and also the World War I when disaster struck; many people were going on strikes which caused economic depression. In the Edwardian era there were approximately 43 million people in the country and 38 million were classed as poor. Money was the main issue; wages were increased by 1% whereas company profits rose by 55%. J.B Priestley was known for his concerns about the people and that he wanted to show his audience that people should treat one another the way one would like to be treated: with respect and kindness, also app... ... middle of paper ... ...reates suspense through Arthur Birling speech by him saying 'There'll be peace and prosperity and rapid progress everywhere'. This indicates that here will be a better life in the future, but we the audience know that there will be peace' 'prosperity' or 'rapid progress' in the future, there will be a war World War II and many strikes going on. The play ends in a cliff-hanger, after the Inspector leaves the Birling family; they think that there off the hook. But following they learn that the inspector is not real and that there was no dead girl. The tension drops down a bit and then that is when it happened. The Birling family get a call from the police telling them that a girl committed suicide and an Inspector is on their way to ask some question about the young girl. Then the tension increases dramatically and everybody including the audience are shocked.
