Children look up to primary caregivers, be it family, teachers, babysitters or peers, as role models. It is important to teach good eating habits by adults demonstrating to children. Parents and caregivers are responsible to help instill these lessons to become habits instead of just occasional instructions. A healthy diet that follows the food pyramid and calorie consciousness allows for flourishing growth in children. Good nutrition is vital for mental, emotional, physical, cognitive development, and reproductive health. Even before birth a proper diet is essential to nourish the fetus so it may be healthy. The needs of a growing child are fast and the nutritional diet needs to equal the ratio. The World Health Organization declares "malnutrition is globally the most important risk factor for illness and death, contributing to more than half of deaths in children worldwide; child malnutrition was associated with 54% of deaths in children in developing countries in 2001"(WHO, 2004).
Children deserve for their caregivers to help achieve highest levels of nutrition. They make choices on what is available and what is familiar to them. If a child sees an adult always eating candy then of course the child will turn to candy first instead of if the adult would eat an apple as their first choice. A balanced diet is one that includes all the food groups. Here is the list of food groups on the food pyramid from most important to least. Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta group is on the bottom and you should get six to eleven serving a day of this group but a child only needs five to nine servings. The next group is the vegetable group. Teaching a healthy lifestyle gives children the chance to thrive in a combination of learning good habits that they can pass on to their children. Conclusion: Childhood obesity is an ongoing battle in the 21st century, but is slowing getting better. If high schools changed their diet plan and made more healthy choice for lunch, it would teach students to make the healthier choice. Having a healthy diet benefits students in all the right ways to feeling good about themselves to being able to focus longer and do better in school. If America wants to have a bright future then the high sodium and fat meals need to be changed in order to have an attentive future. Diet is everything and affects every part of our lives and young student’s lives as well. Changing the diet would be and is worth it. The parents need to talk to their children and teach through example what it means to live a healthy life style so they can follow in their footsteps. It is estimated that about forty-three million children under the age of ten are obese and that was found in urban areas. One of the main reasons obesity develops is due to the fact that the child, adolescent or adult has an unhealthy diet. To be healthy you must have four unsettles ingredients. These four things are eating healthy and the right amount, exercising regularly, sleeping well, and getting the right nutritious vitamins. A child two to eight years old need the same four unsettles to be healthy. The only difference is that they need a different amount of each that an adult. They must eat the recommended intake in each food group corresponding with their age and sex stated in the Canada’s food guide. They must also get daily excurses, with lots of sleep. The National sleep foundation recommends that children one to five years old should get 11 to 14 hours of sleep each night (National sleep foundation, n.d.) They must also get the right nutritious vitamins to help them grow. A good way to achieve this is with a child baste motley vitamin. I will be inspecting the intake of food a child in daycare consumes each day to see if them meet the recommendations set by The Canada food guide. It is apparent that living an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as eating poorly, negatively affects one’s health. From a young age it is quickly learned which foods are considered healthful as opposed to junk food. It is a parents responsibility to supervise the intake of their child's food, however there is a higher risk than ever before of childhood obesity.
Poor nutritional habits have been identified as one of many contributing factors to the increase in childhood obesity. While a multi-disciplinary approach involving family, teachers, medical care providers and the community is desirable, schools, particularly teachers, are in a unique position to play a major role in the education of children and adolescents about nutrition and the prevention of obesity. “Schools are important settings to implement prevention and intervention due to their access, duration of exposure, and subsequent impact on the behavior of children and adolescents” (Pyle, Sharkey, Yetter, Felix, Furlong, & Poston, 2006, p. 372). The challenge of schools, then, is to design and effectively implement a successful curriculum incorporating traditional lecture style, core information with the learning styles and technology skills of today’s 21st century learners, the Net Generation.
With the rapid growth and wealth of information available over the internet, the number of individuals who fail to recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy weight is alarming. Another, concerning fact is the seemingly constant disregard of this data even when it comes to children. Some parents seem to ignore the warnings presented by doctors and other qualified persons rather than realize that their overweight child has a health problem that may cause serious diseases, even for a body so young. Obesity continues to be a growing problem in America despite ample campaigning. Most individuals would agree that children are generally unable to care for themselves; instead they are dependent upon their caregivers, whom are responsible to help them learn right from wrong. This would entail teaching proper health habits, including a healthy diet. One of the things that caregivers can do is heighten their awareness of the weight problems currently plaguing America preferably before their children are diagnosed as overweight or obese. It is also important to use preventative measures that would reduce the chances of children becoming overweight and/or implement steps that would put the child in a healthier weight range. Finally, caregivers should remain patient and understanding with children in order to avoid causing other health risks.

During this time children have growths spurts. Although children’s BMI is usually at minimum during this stage, during the growth spurts their BMI will increase. This leading to a behavioral change of increased appetite. It is important for parents to teach children at this age to make healthy eating choices. Becoming over weight as a child can lead to early puberty and looking older than their actually age. This can cause parents and other adults to treat the child as if they are older. A great intervention for this issue is the Nutrition integrity in schools. This ensures that children are being feed foods that are consistent with the U.S. dietary guidelines for Americans and the Dietary References intakes.
Staying away from processed foods is the first step. Yet, to achieve a healthy diet, many people look to the internet. Many times finding that incorporation of all food groups is the best way to go. This is usually shown with the Food Pyramid, more recently with My Plate. The Food Pyramid was replaced with My Plate in 2011 because, “[like the Food Pyramid,] My Plate divides foods into five groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. It is meant to teach people how to create a balanced meal” (“Nutrition”). This is something the Food Pyramid did not provide information to. It just categorized foods into five food groups, leaving out the recommended amount of what is meant to be consumed a day. This left people with a bad impression that as long as all food groups were incorporated into a meal, the meal would be considered healthy. In contrast, My Plate, painted a picture of the amount of each food group that should be consumed at each meal. Now, it is more common to see school utilize My Plate and serve healthier meals during lunch and break. If more schools were to implement healthier options, schools would be able to help prevent overweight and obesity. With not just lectures, but with physical engagement (“Nutrition.” Healthy Living.). By having them choose between an apple or a banana, instead of some bag of chips and a cookie, there is a higher chance for them to make healthier
Child obesity is at its highest in the United States. With fast food restaurants spreading, new food products being produced, and health rates hiking in children between ages of 3-13, children are at a higher risk of reaching obesity. Nutrients are very important for children to contain in their body due to the fact they are growing regularly. Without the specific vitamins and minerals needed in the body, lack of physical activity, and false parental guidance, children are in jeopardy of becoming overweight. Should parents be responsible for this issue? Parents are accountable for their children’s health, because as their child grows, it is a parent’s job to supply correct and healthy resources to their children.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. To understand why childhood is such a crucial time in human life it is important to study the development before and after birth along with any factors that may alter life in between.
A healthy lifestyle is usually picked up as we get older. However, think of how much more beneficial it would be for our bodies when we get older, if we would have learned and adapted to a healthier lifestyle when we were younger? Teaching your kids how important a healthy diet is, will help them maintain that lifestyle in their older years. Not to mention have lower health risks, higher self-esteem and it will give them the energy they need to keep up with their eating habits and maintain their body weight.
