Homosexuality in America: Good or Bad

American society has always been divided when it comes to the topic of homosexuality. Homosexuality is more widely accepted today than it was several years ago, but some people still treat homosexuals like outcasts and discriminate against them in many areas. Not all of America has adopted the idea that homosexuality is okay and even normal. However, more have become tolerant. This issue is far more than just a religious battle. Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs, and they have the right to do so, but it is still important for America to be open-minded to people of different statuses and beliefs. However, when a person is treated differently due to their choice of a life partner, their personal freedom has already been stripped away. Times are different now; divorces are happening left and right with heterosexual couples, so why not give gay marriage a chance at success? Marriages are what our culture revolves around. We live our lives in the hopes of finding someone to spend it with, and fulfilling our happily ever after dream that we form as children. We are taught to find the right person, fall in love, get married and have a family, and live happily ever after. Yet, homosexual couples are not allowed this privilege. They are not guaranteed the same rights that a heterosexual couple is granted. They can live together, but they cannot share health plans. They are not even guaranteed to be with each other in the hospital if one gets sick. Most arguments against it are flawed and completely opinion based. Some say it will send the wrong moral messages to children or harm them, and that it will devalue the traditional marriage. With divorce at an all-time high, it is clear that marriage has already been devalued. Divorce is proven to be harmful to children, just as much as teaching children to be prejudice is. There are many arguments for both sides of this topic. A lot of homosexual couples, especially males, are leaning to adoption because they cannot procreate their own children. A positive about this is that some homosexual relationships do provide more stable relationships then that of the traditional heterosexual marriages. In America today, many children are raised in single homes. An argument for homosexual adoption shows that at least a homosexual couple allows for a child to have two full time parents, which typically equals a more stable environment to grow up in. Also, homosexual parenting is better than placing children in foster care, where they are often moved from home to home until they are eighteen years of age. It is proven that children do best in a stable environment. Which of those two scenarios sounds more stable? Arguments against homosexual adoption state that children need role models of both sexes. They need to be introduced and raised by both sexes to become well balanced adults and to learn their proper “roles” in society. Some also believe that if children are raised by homosexual parents, then they are most likely to seek out same sex relationships as they get older.
