Homophobia in Africa

5pm: in a country not far from the Gulf of Guinea coast a boy named Richard is lying on a boat looking at the stars, he wonders, “I still love Robert, why did I follow mother’s advice in marrying this woman, why?” He is so immersed in his thoughts that when his wife calls him in to the house to eat he doesn’t notice. Richard is from Cameroon and by the age of 22 was forced to marry Antoniette because of his “upcoming femininity personality”. Mohammed, a young bank treasurer, is from Senegal and he questions everyday why his mother keeps on stopping from seeing Humad, a future CEO and Mohammed’s best friend. Both of them have being so close to the extent that both refused to marry which made their families suspicious. “They may possess evil spirits,” they keep on murmuring, “they don’t want to marry”. Ultimately, Maria, a Burundi student who thinks she’s being possessed or cursed for falling secretly in love with her classmate plans on committing suicide. “I am crazy, my people say those feelings are curses,” she keeps on thinking. All these people apart from being from Africa have something in common: internal and secretive rebellion to follow the norm. They all have feelings, they all suffer the necessity to be loved by the ones they desire… unfortunately, “this is Africa, this will never be accepted” they murmured as they keep up with their sad lives. Homosexuality is the sexual attraction of people of the same sex and is a sexual orientation which is globally known but not accepted everywhere, precisely in Africa and some European countries.
With homosexuality forbidden in Africa and the trepidation of being killed or prosecuted, Africans hide their feelings in “appropriate relationships” or simply mask it and love silently....
