Homemade Raw Diet for Pets

There is an abundance of facts and opinions buzzing around the internet about the health benefits of a homemade raw diet for pets versus feeding dry kibble. It is implied that many studies have been done for dry kibble and canned food, but a lack thereof when it comes to studies for homemade and raw diets. However, homemade and raw diets are becoming more popular today because of the fact people are becoming more aware of the dangers that commercial pet food can bring upon their pets. Low quality commercial pet food can lead to health problems, yet an improperly balanced homemade diet can be just as detrimental. With homemade raw diets being time consuming to make, pet owners should feed 50% dry kibble and 50% homemade raw diet in order for their pets to live longer, healthier lives. Feeding a raw diet is a balancing act, and a balanced diet is key to any living being’s health and life longevity.
Eating wholesome fresh food for all animals, including humans, is what nature intended. Arguments have been made that feeding, raw fresh food for dogs is dangerous, posing potential health risks and most of the time not nutritionally balanced because owners do not do enough research. While all of that can be true, scientific studies have been conducted to show the benefits of feeding a raw diet vs. dry kibble. One of the oldest and well known is Potuttengers conducted between 1932 and 1942. Cats were divided into two groups. Both groups of cats were fed the same diet of 2/3 meat, 1/3 milk and cod liver oil. The meat included beef, lamb, and poultry muscle meat, bones and organs, tripe, sweetbreads, brains and heart.
