Anywhere you go in the world today, you see women with nails that are painted in so many different colors and designs. Nail polish dates back to the 1920’s when the first modern day nail varnish was invented by the Charles Revson Company. This particular invention has impacted the cosmetics market for women, because every women who wants to be stylish and express themselves in a fun way, buys nail polish. Nail varnishes have many components to make it both safe and user friendly. Some of the chemical components consist of: film forming agents and resins such as nitrocellulose, tosylamide and formaldehyde. Also, plasticizers are used for flexibility and solvents to keep the polish in a liquid form, along with different pigments for colors and shine. There are many more components that go into nail polish that will be explained later in this paper.
Nail polish may seem like a simple invention in today’s world but think about the process inventors went through to make it user friendly and safe. One of the main components in nail polish is nitrocellulose. Nitrocellulose is a long lasting film forming agent. (Madnani 2012) It’s made from nitrated cellulose derived from plant cells. Cellulose is a naturally occurring component in the cell wall of green plant, most often cotton plants. Fibers of the cotton are ground so small that they don’t have to be removed from the product.(Winkler 2013) Cellulose is nitrated to form an ester, thus, nitrocellulose if formed. Nitrocellulose is one of the most useful film forming agents known for coatings, film, ink and adhesive industry. Making nail polish took many trials until they got it right, and since then it has been an extremely successful invention. Lipstick did not stay on for too long, and more and more people tried to come up with a lipstick that lasted longer (Edmonds). Hazel Bishop was the first woman to successfully create a 12-hour lipstick (Edmonds). Bishop did this with the help of Bromo acid (Edmonds). This pigment stained lips so there was no need to worry about the product fading away and coming off (Edmonds). The negative about this lipstick is that it dries out lips (Edmonds). This happened because there were not enough oils in the lipstick formula (Edmonds). The recipe would not work if there were too many oils because the product had to have more pigment (Edmonds). Closer to the 20th century the urge to make a better long-lasting lipstick was thriving. Companies of lipstick brands went through many different ingredients and series of tests to find the perfect lipstick (Edmonds). Most tests were used to imitate daily life. Some examples included eating, drinking, kissing, and even playing sports (Edmonds). Playing sports increases sweat around the face including near the upper lip. Since glitter is so hard to remove, I started with two coats of a glue-based base coat. After that dried, I painted two coats of Cover Girl's Lav-endure polish. I was disappointed with the consistency of this polish which was streaky and thin. After two coats, there were splotchy streaks that showed some of the nail underneath. I would have needed three or four coats for a perfectly opaque manicure. Even though I have a large selection of Cover Girl polishes, I tend to avoid using them unless I need a specific color, or I'm using it as a base of sorts. In this case, the lavender was only a base for the glitters.

Painting nails is a creative outlet for self-expression and can aid in complementing one’s style; complex techniques and designs have emerged throughout the evolution of nail painting, but can be easily tackled with a systematic approach. As one dives into nail painting endeavors, it is easy to make a mistake and become frustrated. Obstacles ranging from difficulty in painting with one’s non dominant hand to accidentally smudging the paint may push one to abandon the effort altogether. Fortunately, the art of painting one’s nails is a simple task that can be mastered through practice, a methodical system of filing, applying a base coat, and applying a final coat with even brush strokes.

In modern times, it’s an everyday thing to see a person with acrylic nails. In fact, they have become an integral part of fashion. The evolution of make-up has quite the turbulent ride, beginning approximately six-thousand years as means of protection and to aid health and has now evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry. During its evolution, make-up has been declared illegal, immoral and in some instances was deadly. Today, makeup comes in thousands upon thousands of colors, textures and is even specific to skin type and race.

Methods such as these would turn out to be quite lengthy, as this procedure required the nails to be soaked in the mixture for several hours’. In Chinese culture only the wealthy were permitted to wearing bright colours. Poorer citizens were only permitted to wear dull colours and defiance would result in the death penalty.
