High School Internships When thinking about graduating high school and going into college, do you ever think that you will get a job right when you graduate? Yes that may be the case for some individuals but for the more technical jobs and the ones that require more schooling for, look for student who have experience with their major. It is important to know the different internships that are offered throughout high school and college. Browsing through the Missoula hospitals web pages I found information regarding the different types of job shadowing and volunteer work that they provide. Starting with St. Patrick Hospital web page I found a link leading to the different volunteer work that they have to offer. St. Patrick Hospital’s dedicated volunteers provide support to patients, visitors and staff in a variety of areas throughout the hospital. Some volunteers’ help patients find the department they are looking for or escort patients when they need assistance. Others work in the gift shops and deliver flowers to patient rooms. Volunteers also have the opportunity to help hospital staff with various projects and events at the hospital. Students pursuing degrees in medical fields are invited to volunteer in the Emergency Department, performing administrative duties (“Volunteering” 1). Leading from that I decided to look at and see what Community Medical Center had as far as these opportunities. Usually volunteers are placed in the waiting rooms or in the gift shops. Some are in the cancer resource center, and others are a greeter or escort people to certain areas of the hospital. Volunteering through Community Medical Center students receive many benefits, such as yearly awards, discounts in the cafeteria and gift shop, and a g... ... middle of paper ... ... 2014. N.p., n.d. Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
For my service learning project, I will be volunteering at ONHL Hospice. ONHL's mission is to “…improve the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families through the provision of physical, psychological, spiritual, and practical services...with services from the heart” (ONHL Hospice). Compassionate end of life care for the terminally ill is the hallmark of hospice. A specially trained interdisciplinary team improves the quality of life of the dying by caring for their unique needs as well as the needs of their families. Providing medical care by a physician and nurse; furnishing medication, supplies, and equipment; offering a social worker, home health aide, and volunteer to assist with practical or personal care are some
I volunteered at San Joaquin Community Hospital Emergency Department in Bakersfield, California for 3-4 hours a week for two-and-a-half years. While volunteering in the ED, I helped the cleaning staff clean rooms and beds for incoming patients, I restocked rooms with needed supplies, I talked with patients who needed someone to talk to, I helped staff call patients from the Emergency Department waiting room, and I cleaned commonly touched objects such as: door handles, counters, computer keyboards, and hand rails. I also helped in the gift shop if the volunteer supervisor needed someone to cover someone who may have become sick. In the gift shop I restocked items, helped customers find certain items, and worked at the cash register. While
My community service work at County Hospital is to care for the rudimentary needs of each patient. My goals are to provide inspiration during the healing process, teach kindness and compassion, and discover my own abilities for empathy. "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I'll try again to tomorrow (Mary Anne Radmacher)." My hope as a volunteer is to help each patient find that voice, find that courage to go forward.
During the process many college students make the slight mistake of not thinking about their futures. They think about their major and degree, but what happens after college? Many students don’t realize it, but the concept of networking and preparing yourself for the future, is vital for any career. After college there is still much work to be done for students. Many students find themselves lost and struggling after graduation. With a degree and the education, it takes real world experience to become successful in any career. In a survey of 2,001 students or recent graduate’s ages 18 to 24 year olds and 1,000 hiring managers, fewer than two in five hiring managers who had interviewed recent graduates in the past two years found them prepared for a job in their field of study. Those numbers represent today’s college students not networking properly creating a problem for later careers. There are many options for networking in both Greek life and for those who don’t choose that path. For the people debate and oppose Greek life, universities offer large programs to get students out networking. A common networking tool student’s use is the internship process. An internship is a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment, and it can be paid or unpaid. This gives students a real look at the workforce and reality of what it is like.
shadowing and assisting the doctors at the clinic as well as on a motor home transformed for the purpose of traveling
It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
I was able to shadow a physician and a nurse at my current placement in Family Medicine.
I have volunteered at "Alandi Primary Health Care Center" in a rural area in India and also the" Indiana Mission of Mercy" in Indiana .I had the experience of volunteering at two different places in different situations but the nature of the dental work was the same. Conducting a Children's day retreat for Remand home care made me realise that dental education is very important.
My desire to bridge the gap is also fueled by the patients I encounter while volunteering
The successes I have come across at volunteering at Suncrest Assisted Living vastly outweigh the hardships. During my last fifteen hours of volunteering, I was able to improve on my listening skills and my ability to follow and complete tasks the way my supervisor would like them done, even if their way was not my preference. I was also able to forge many relationships with the residents that I helped and will always cherish the relationships I made.
Volunteering in health missions, however do require some sacrifice, but is defiantly a rewarding experience. You have to be able to set time aside from job, family, and any other time consuming things. It can be hard to give up these things and go off away from your family, especially for long periods of times. Missions can vary in length from a week or two to a lifelong profession. People come from all over seeking volunteer on missions; careers vary to where the ships have a range of professions, providing a very effective way of providing help for those that need it. Even with people coming from all over there is still a great demand for volunteers in all fields of health care.

At the beginning of this volunteer experience, I walked in hopeful that I would gain some knowledge about the different careers that the medical field possesses, but I got so much more than that. I learned that community service is about making an impact in the lives of other members who share my community.
