Recognition and Dollars
High School athletics have grown to be a budgeting challenge for many school districts and for others, a revenue stream. Within the inner circle of numerous athletic directors encompassed with the popularity of High School athletics and the pressure to succeed has become as important as students earning A’s in their classes. With this demand for notoriety comes the urging of not only being successful on the court and field, but to have a working budget that can meet the demands of up to date facilities, team equipment, payroll for coaches, and hosting events to increase exposure along with revenue (Jensen, 2003). For schools with the working knowledge of how to successfully host a basketball tournament, they can create a one-time event that helps raise money for the program and bring statewide attention. The following essay will illustrate the structure and process of a well hosted boys and girls high school basketball tournament. This outline will include the budgeting, operations, advertising, ticket sales, player/school passes, public relations, crowd control, sponsorship by professional vendors, hospitality, sporting officials, first aid, safety, and media alike. An event checklist can be found in Appendix A for a complete list of the essential items.
Budgeting
In order for a sporting event to be successful, those responsible for managing the event must place the budgeting of the finances a priority (Masteralexis, 2012). For large sporting events, budgeting or developing the plan to implement the event may occur one to two years prior to the event being held.
