In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne describes main character, Reverend Dimmesdale, using the character foil of Pearl, Dimmesdale’s illegitimate daughter conceived by adultery. Pearl is raised by her mother, who is forced to wear the scarlet letter “A“. However, her father is kept a secret. Although Pearl may not know that Dimmesdale is her father, she certainly suspects something as Dimmesdale‘s character declines rapidly, both in health and in faith. Hawthorne uses these suspicions and differences in character as a foil to enforce the central theme that hidden sin can destroy any man. When describing Dimmesdale and Pearl, Hawthorne describes two very different characters. Dimmesdale is the most popular preacher in the puritan community; young, handsome, modest, and strong. The young ladies admire him and even the church elders revere him. Yet, Pearl is loud, obnoxious, and evil. As a child born of adultery she is shunned by the adults and taunted by the children.
