Lifestyle choices play a crucial role in the health of people as the
decisions made about certain behaviours can be one of the most important
factors influencing the likelihood of ill health and premature death. This
essay will discuss some of the detrimental effects that poor nutritional
intake and alcohol consumption have on health and how they prevent a person
from reaching their best level of health in relation to the dimensions of
health and wellness proposed by Donatelle (2011). In addition, two health
promotion and health education strategies will be applied to the lifestyle
behaviours with an explanation for their relevancy to the lifestyles. The
definitions of health and wellness have been redefined over time as people
become more aware of how they view, approach, and behave, so that good
health can be achieved. There are numerous health models that seek to
understand and predict health behaviours, for example, one Maori holistic
health model is Te Whare Tapa Whā, (New Zealand Government, 2011), that
views health as having four parts, (the walls of a marae), family,
physical, mental, and spiritual health, which are necessary to maintain the
structure, (a person). The model of health and wellness identified by
Donatelle (2011), contains six interdependent dimensions which are
physical, social, intellectual, emotional, environmental, and spiritual

Health visitors are registered nurses who undergo extra training to work in the community with families and children under five. The main principles of health visiting are to ensure that children have a healthy and positive start to life by recognising health needs, encouraging health enhancing activities and influencing health policies (Craig and Lindsay, 2000). Health visitors provide the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) which allows all families access to services ranging from immunisations through to safeguarding. Although health visitors play a key part in the healthcare of families and children they also work closely with other health professionals in order to help families achieve optimum health. The study addresses the impact of dietary acculturation on the rates of obesity among the migrant communities in Logan, South-East Queensland. Dietary acculturation is a result of migration and involves the adoption of nutritional behaviours and dietary practices of the host countries by the migrants (1). Health literacy is a term not widely understood by the general population. It is defined as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information needed to make appropriate health decisions and services needed to prevent or treat illness,” (About health literacy, 2014). A person’s level of health literacy is based on their age, education level, socioeconomic standing, and cultural background. Patients with low health literacy have a more difficult time navigating the health care system. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this group of patients may find it harder to find medical services and health care providers, fill out health forms, provide their complete medical history with their providers, seek preventative care, understand the health risks associated with some behaviors, taking care of chronic health conditions, and understanding how to take prescribed medications (About health literacy, 2014). It is to a certain extent the patient’s responsibility to increase their own health literacy knowledge. But to what extent can they learn on their own? Those working in the health field have been trained to navigate the health system and understand the medical terms. They have the knowledge and capability to pass on that understanding to their patients. Health care professionals have a shared responsibility to help improve patients’ health literacy.

For this paper I decided to take a second and evaluate my life and think about what were some of my current lifestyle habits and behaviors and which out of these habits would I like to change. After sitting down and evaluating all of my main habits I categorized them into groups of which ones were helping to lead me to a long healthy lifestyle and which ones were likely to lead me to an unhealthy life and lifestyle. After narrowing these unhealthy habits down to my top three I decided to focus this paper and my attention on my current nutrition and most of all on my negative eating habits. After evaluating my lifestyle and all of my unhealthy habits I felt that my current nutrition level and eating patterns were in need of the most improvement and change.
Health education is one of the most controversial subjects taught in schools throughout the United States. Many people argue that the topics discussed in health classes do not have appropriate content for middle school and high school students to be learning. Despite the controversy surrounding these topics, health education is still an extremely important aspect of the middle school and high school curricula. Children are being exposed to alcohol, tobacco, and various drugs at earlier ages than ever before. Health education is the best vehicle to inform students of the dangers and consequences that are associated with these substances.
