Hazardous waste it does not only affect the environment it also has the ability to affect wildlife and the human population. Hazardous waste is a serious problem if any form of it is leaked in the environment it can cause tremendous environmental catastrophes. On the other hand it can be used as synthetic fuel to power certain machines. So hazardous waste can be used for helpful purposes but it can also devastate the environment. Hazardous waste what is it? According to The World Book Encyclopedia hazardous wastes “…chemicals and chemical by products that can endanger human health or pollute the environment,” (122). Although that is an accurate definition of a hazardous waste it does not state that “Before a material can be classified as a hazardous waste, it must first be a solid waste as defined under RCRA,” (Wastes-Haz. Waste). Together you have a more accurate description of what a hazardous waste is but there is one thing that both are missing the characteristics of a hazardous waste. For example, a “Waste is declared hazardous if it corrodes (wears away) other materials; explodes; is easily ignited; reacts strongly with water; is unstable to heat or shock; or is poisonous,” (Haz. Waste 122). Now we have a definition of what a hazardous waste is capable of, defined as before it is called a “hazardous waste”, and the characteristics the material must have to be a “hazardous waste”. To really learn what a hazardous waste is you must know all the different types of hazardous waste. Some “Hazardous wastes can be liquids, solids, gases, or sludges.
