The Halifax International Airport plays a major role in servicing tourists and travelers but is also the economic engine of Nova Scotia and the hub city for the Maritime Provinces. In this paper I am going to prove how valuable the Stanfield Airport is and what it’s impact are on our region.
First, just a brief history of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport it was built by the Department of Transport near Kelly Lake, on land provided by the City of Halifax. It is presently operated by the Halifax International Airport Authority, and opened in June, 1960, with a temporary license.
The Airport is located in the Halifax Regional Municipality, 38 kilometres north of Halifax, the provincial capital. The Aerotech Business Park borders the Halifax International Airport on the south and east boundaries. Major tenants of the high-tech park include Pratt & Whitney Canada and Northrop Grumman Canada Corporation (formerly Litton Systems Canada). The closest communities are Enfield which is 8 kilometres away and Waverley which is 12 kilometres.
In 1985 The Halifax International Airport finally evolved from a terminus operation for central Nova Scotia to a hub-and-spoke Airport operation for the entire Atlantic Region. The Stanfield International Airport is Atlantic Canada’s gateway to the world. It is the region’s principal full-service airport providing passengers and cargo clients with access to global markets across the country, the United States and Europe, and the only airport in Atlantic Canada to offer U.S. preclearance, and Canada Customs services on a 24 hour, seven day a week basis. The Airport is a major economic, fiscal and employment generator valued at over $1.2 billion to the provincial economy and welcomes almost 3.5...

...llion industry in Nova Scotia based upon the most recent provincial government statistics. There were 1.993 million visitors to Nova Scotia in 2012 with 32% arriving via air at HSIA. Tourists entering Nova Scotia at Halifax Stanfield tend to stay longer and spend more money. They contributed an estimated $882 million to the Nova Scotia economy and accounted for 15,030 jobs (direct and spinoff), $114 million in total taxes and $390 million in payroll. All these stats and figures makes me believe that the Halifax Stanfield International Airport has a significant impact on our region and has done an exceptional job serving residents in the east coast. I also really like the idea Lachlan Barber said about building smaller malls out towards the airport to service travelers with long lay overs. I believe it is in their recent business plans to do so in the upcoming years.
Virgin Atlantic’s operates from several hub airports in London. Its current home base airport is located at Heathrow in London, England. Currently, the company has two other major hubs in Gatwick and Manchester. However, Heathrow presently is at full capacity, and Gatwick is reaching full capacity in the near future. While various options are available, Virgin Atlantic and London’s commissioned officials are working to reach an agreement on the long-term solution to benefit the airline and the economy.
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the largest airports in the world and is the main hub for Delta Air Lines, one of the largest airlines in the world. This case study will examine the relationship between demand and capacity for the home hub of Delta Air Lines. Future predictions for air travel estimate enormous growth rates as high as 50% by the year 2025. Airlines, airports, and the entire air-travel infrastructure will be challenged with the task of keeping up with this level of demand as we move towards the future.
The Golden Age of Sail was a steady period of economic success for the Maritimes. Although short lived, it spanned from 1846 to 1867 and made British North America a major player in the international shipbuilding industry. This time of prosperity and nation building also marked a tradition of craftsmanship – the coming together of wind, wood and sail – especially in Saint John, New Brunswick. The establishment of a vessel registry kept track of the number of ships built in the city, and the numbers steadily rose, which fostered the Provinces growth far beyond expectation. This paper will focus on Saint Johns development within its larger colonial context and serves as a key proponent of shipbuilding in the Maritimes during the nineteenth century. Through its early beginnings, the Golden Age itself and the industries subsequent decline, the ebbs and flows experienced by the region will be illustrated to assess the true value of the Golden Age of Sail in Saint John.

The demographic environment includes the study of human populations in terms of size, density, location and other statistical information (allbusiness, n.d.). Airlines look to airports that are situated in cities or population with high density. Airlines have the need to serve airports and markets where they can generate sustainable levels of traffic and yield (IATA, 2013). This is particularly true as the airline industry is already highly competitive and coupled with competition that drives lower fares for customers; the need to operate in an airport that revenue potential for airlines is crucial. Population density is one of the factors that affect the choice of airport for airlines. Southwest is a LCC that serves dense, short-haul markets on a point-to-point basis with frequent service (Dresner, Lin , & Wi, 1996). A strategy that LCCs can adopt when expanding is to look out for markets with high density and high GDP and tap on the latent demand of the middle class. Ryanair has been successful in seeking out markets with high density and GDP ( Ryanair, n.d.). Ryanair’s strategy is to attract the latent demand for extra flights distinctive of the middle class, which is especially concentrated in high GDP areas as they are more willing to spend money on leisure trips, while still being price conscious (Malighetti, Paleari , & Redondi, 2009). The decision to serve a market is crucial to airlines as it has fixed costs that c...
WestJet is the second-largest carrier in Canada, which mainly focuses on economic airlines. In decades past, WestJet expanded its destination network form all western Canadian cities to international scope. During this development period, IT played a important role. For example, electronic ticket is used in the airline reservation system. However, some IT-related issues also hinders the company’s development.
In Denver the traffic load that was being handled by Stapelton Airport was too high. When Denver International (DIA) opened in February 1995 it could immediately take three times of the traffic that Stapelton could the week before. I believe that the airports around the country and specifically in Phoe...
Growing globally- Air Canada have the opportunity to grow globally by building their network with different countries and this relationship should be long lasting for more growth.
Airports can be considered as important national resources of most countries in the world. The main responsibility of an airport is in transportation of people and goods and in internal and global business. They are where the nation’s aviation system connects with other modes of transportation and where state responsibility for managing and regulating air traffic operations intersects with the role of governments that own and operate most airports. However, most major airports are owned and operated by the private sectors. This is due to several reasons such as to improve efficiency and economic performance, be more competitive as well as to maximize the community’s return from the airport assets in which public enterprise found out to be less efficient in term of its production and management.
Toronto is a futuristic city with state of the art technologies and latest innovation used in its daily administration, management and development. The city’s mass rapid transit system has become a model for similar projects for developing countries. The main arterial roads and highways are wide enough to allow smooth traffic flow and the Toronto Subway and Rapid Transit system efficiently bears the burden. Toronto also has an extensive network of public transport buses. Toronto Pearson International airport is one of the most important and busiest airports of North America. The city has one of the most advanced health care systems and is a major center for biotechnology and advance medicine research. Toronto is also an important educational hub of North America with top notch technological and research institutes, universities, colleges, cultural institutions are present here. The city is also famous for the CN Tower one of the tallest freestanding structure in the world and which is the most popular and iconic symbol of Toronto. The CN Tower is a communication tower which has again put Toronto as a hub of Communication in the World.
As Sassen (40) defined, networks and circus are elementary of global cities, having a well–connected airport is thus critical for linkage of a city with the world as it allows intensive flows of information, people and products. Hong Kong has developed itself into an international aviation hub the holds leading position in both passenger and cargo terms. According to the Airports Council International (), HKIA ranked as number 10 and 1 as the world’s busiest airport by passenger and cargo traffic respectively. We should, of course, be proud of having such an outstanding airport as foundation of our economic success. However, other Asian cities have caught up in challenging Hong Kong’s leadership for their increasing passengers and cargo flows and expansion plan to increase capacity. To what extent the third runway, as suggested by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), can help Hong Kong withstand such a fierce competition?
Jet Airways was found in 1st April 1992 by Mr. Naresh Goyal and they started their operation after one year may 5th 1993, Jet began international operations from Chennai to Colombo in March 2004. The company was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange
The year 1930 was a landmark in history because Northwest moved their home base operation to their present headquarters in St. Paul. The air service grew overnight with the acquisition of Southern Airways in 1936. Northwest’s famous red tail was introduced for the first time on February 1948.
Airports are vast facilities covering many acres of land where passenger beginning the flight portions of their travels. The first flight by the Wright brothers in Kitty Hawk, NC in 1903 only required a runway. As the technology of flight advanced to offer passenger service, there was soon a need for a building to manage passenger needs. Airports of today provide many key services needed for the traveler whether they are beginning, transferring, or ending their journeys. The demand for air transportation rises each year, according to the Department of Transportation (United States Department of Transportation, 2013) 815.3 passengers traveled by airplanes in 2012. With the demand expected to rise, airports must be able to keep pace with services. There are many different services provided however, this report will discuss terminal design, baggage handling, and ground access.
