The Growing Epidemic of Cyberbullying

Cyber bullying has been around since the creation of advanced communication technology. In the last few years, however, this issue has become more common, more related to sex and most of all more dangerous. It has gotten so dangerous that children have killed each other and/or committed suicide after having been involved in a cyber bullying incident. Little attention and support from school authorities, more access to computers, and the latest cool thing (social networks) are all factors that have contributed to the rising of cyber-bullying practices.

Cyber bullying is when a preteen or teen is harassed, threatened, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise molested by another child with the use of technology such as internet, mobile phones, and other interactive and digital technologies. What determines the limit of the creativity used when cyber bulling is the access to technology that children may have. There are two types of cyber bullying. Direct attacks which refer to the messages been sent to the child directly while cyber-bullying by proxy refers to when others are used to cyber bull the victim. In cyber- bullying by proxy the 3RD person or accomplice does not necessary have knowledge of what is going on but in this type adults are usually involved in the harassment making the situation more complicated and more dangerous.

The characteristics of cyber bullying are first anonymity, which made it attractive to young people to engage in this activity especially when there is a nexus to the school, because it allows them to target the victim without being easily detected unless they are using social networking sites that make it easier to identify the source of the comments. ... at home which is why schools and parents need to work cohesively to address and resolve the issue. Many states have considered passing laws in order to punish the perpetrators of the abuse as a result of the previously mentioned incidents. It is very important to pay attention to this issue as it is something that involves, police departments, schools, and of course the parents.
