Greatest Olympic Moments
The Olympics is event that has moved and changed the world, specially in hard times, like the World Wars and in racial discrimination. The modern olympics are based on the Greek games that were held every four years, the word Olympiad means 4 years. The Olympics started in 776 BC until 393 AD, it went on through 12 centuries, when emperor Theodosius decided to ban all the pagan cults. The Olympics were dedicated to the olympian gods, "they owed their purity and importance to religion" (olympic.org). Olympia, site of the olympic games, is part of the Peloponnese, the island of Pelops. Pelops was the founder of the olympic games and we owe him a great deal. Olympia wasn't only a place for sports its also a place for worship, religious, and political practices.
The Olympics are held every four years, the modern olympics started in 1896 Athens, Greece. "The summer olympics have 38 sports in total"(Great Olympic Moments pg. 4). After 28 years they decided to create the winter olympics, the first winter olympic was held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Then after 24 more years in 1948 the Paralympics were created, where disabled people were able to compete. In this event the world would gather for 2 weeks and watch their paisanos compete.
There have been impressive competitions through out history, which leave you thinking to yourself if these people are truly human. Like Usain Bolt he broke the 100m running record plus he took the gold. Steve Redgrave won a gold medal in 5 consecutive olympics from 1984-2000, thats very impressive. Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals in 8 events, he won this medals in the 2008 Beijing olympics and "has one more gold medals than anybody in history"(Great Olympic Moments). A ...

...thens. The final and most recent great moment in olympic history was in Beijing 2008 when Phelps broke a record that will never be broken but it can be tied. He won 8 gold medals out of his 8 events. He broke Mark Spitz's 36 year old record.
This moments are the one's we cherish even if they have to do with terrorist, boycotts, discrimination, and political movements. The olympics is an event where every 4 years the world unites to compete and show that the human race is equal for everyone.

Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. Many factors shaping the Olympic Games reflect the changes that have taken place in our world since the last game in 393 CE in Greece such changes include woman’s suffrage, global economy, world wars, and proving competency.
At the Olympic Games at Stockholm, Sweden, in 1912, Jim Thorpe performed the dazzling accomplishment of winning both the five-event pentathlon and ten-event-decathlon, an achievement that had never ever been performed by an athlete. In Ancient Greece they formed the Greek Olympics in the year 776 B.C in which participants participate to honor the gods and demonstrate their physical abilities. What was amazing was that those who participated were only participating in honor and not prizes. Something that they would win was the olive wreath which was basically winning the honor and recognition of the people and the gods. Comparing to the ancient time and now is that there are now commercialized, endorsements, and sponsorships for athletes to represent companies in the Olympics. However, the Olympics still hold true to the idea that it is still a place for participants compete with the best in the world for the honor (gold,silver, and bronze medal). Also, if we look at the sculpture of the Diskobolos made by Myron of Eleutherae it represented the general athlete in motion and would symbolize the ancient times athlete. Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. This tradition dates back to ancient Greece where the games began. Tony Perrottet writes about the traditions of the ancient game in his book The Naked Olympics.

I was swimming the 200 meter fly I was at a really good time when I had 50 meter sprint left at the end all I could think about was I’m going to set the new world record. Olympic swimming is a very fun sport it is very athletic. Every year in the summer time every one always sits around a TV watching this it is very famous in America. Swimmers from all around the world come and here and compete. There is a lot of competition there I have found out a lot about the history of swimming. There are a lot of events and tons of records that have been broke. A lot of Olympians have set future goals to stride for.
The Olympic Games are the leading worldwide sport event that held every 4 years, featuring thousands of international athletes from more than 200 nations participating in a variety of sports competitions. Although the Games are about winning the sports competitions, they also provide a platform for the nations throughout the world to learn different cultures and share uniqueness. The Greeks had worshipped all kinds of gods and they were all very important within Greek religion. Some of the gods that they worshipped were Zeus, Hera, Athena, Apollo and much more. It is unknown on how the Olympics first began but according to History.com, it states that legends presume that the Roman Hercules, Heracles, had founded the games and toward the end of the 6th century B.C the event had become one of the most famous Greek sporting festivals. However, the first official recorded records of the ancient Olympics date back to 776 B.C in the Greek city Olympia. Olympia is located in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece.

Ancient Olympics The ancient Olympics had some differences from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Women where not allowed to even watch the games on penalty of death let alone play in them.. Also, the games were always held at Olympia in Greece instead of being moved around to different sites every time. But also they had some similarities to our modern Olympics, winning athletes were heroes who put their home towns on the map, and became financially sound for life. The conflict between the Olympic's ideals of sportsmanship and unity and the commercialism and political acts which accompany the Games where also present in ancient times.
