As one of the most endangered species of primate in the world today the Golden Lion Tamarin exists mainly in the areas of South America, more specifically the coasts boarding the country of brazil all the to Uruguay. Originating from the luscious and seemingly never-ending rainforests of Brazil the Golden Lion Tamarins have had to relocate over the years. Due to the interruption of man through out these spacious and lush forests, many species has been left homeless and even pushed to the brink of extinction. Cultivation, deforestation, and industrialization have hacked away at this natural beauty, leaving almost nothing to those who inhabited it before man kind entered this untouched domain, including the homes of the entire population of the Golden Lion Tamarins. These magnificent primates now reside in three major national or biological reserves: Poco das Antas Biological Reserve, União Biological Reserve, and Traquara Municipal National Park. All three work towards protecting and helping rebuild the Golden Lion Tamarin species before they become extinct.
The taxonomy of the Golden Lion Tamarin is as follows, the Order: Primate, Suborder: Haplorrhini, Infraorder: Simifformes. Family: Cebidae, Subfamily: Callitrichinae, Genus: Leontopitchinae. Finally, Species: Leontopithecus Rosalia or commonly called the Golden Lion Tamarin. Other local names in South America consist of: “Mico-Leão-Dourado” (Portuguese); “Sauí-Piranga” (Spanish), and simply called “Red Lion Monkey” (Rowe 1996; Kinzey 1997).

I visited the Sacramento Zoo during the afternoon of April 21, 2017. The weather was wonderful, sunny, warm, and there was a slight breeze. It got a bit more breezy the longer I was there. Visiting the zoo to observe primates allowed me to become a little more aware of how primatologists study primates. Even though I’ve been to many different zoos several different times, I never realized how many primates were associated with the zoos, as well as the variety of primates in the zoos. The Sacramento Zoo has eight different primates, all in different classifications, superfamilies, or subfamilies. Lions are one of the world’s most famous predators. Their preys ranges from insects to giraffes; but they prefer large animals such as zebras and wildebeast. The lion will cautiously stalk its prey until it is within close range and it will sprint reaching speeds about 50 to 60 km/h. The lion will usually take its prey down by the neck using its huge jaws and razor sharp claws. The female is the hunter and will have the first meat, soon after the male comes to share the meat.

Snow leopard. When most people hear those words put together, they think of a large, stunning cat with piercing blue eyes, prowling across a snowy terrain high up in the mountains. What they don’t imagine is a helpless animal whose habitat is being destroyed. That is exactly what is happening to these beautiful creatures. Mountain ranges, where these rare cats live, are under the attack of global warming, and the snow leopard population is dwindling because of humans. One of the more well-known snow leopard habitats are the Himalayas. Located in Asia, the Himalayas are becoming warmer each year, which results in a higher treeline. The snow leopards are forced to retreat ever higher into the mountains, where there is less food, vegetation, and, most importantly, oxygen. Even more, humans are attracted to the alluring furs of this beautiful feline. Illegal hunters, or poachers, track down the snow leopards and kill them for their pelts, bones, and body parts. The snow leopard’s fur is a whitish-gray color, tinged with occasional yellow in the spring and dark gray to black splotches, or rosettes (Scherer & Fletcher). The colors of their fur act as camouflage against the mountain snow. Additionally, this cat is one of the smallest of the world’s large cats, averaging about two feet tall from paws to shoulders and about six feet from head to the base of the tail. The tail, however, can add up to three feet to their body length. The snow leopard eats anything from wild sheep to birds to gazelles to red pandas. Snow Leopard’s are found living in the high, rugged mountains of Central and South Asia. They live in areas like Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The conditions in the high Central Asia Mountains are harsh and brutal. The Snow Leopards are prepared for these types of conditions. Snow Leopards like the jagged broken cliffs, and rocky ravines stalk and sneak up on the nearby prey. Snow Leopards are very nomadic, they constantly move around marking territory to find prey. They look for cliffs that have a good open view to search for prey on. They have thick long fur, which will keep them warm in their cold habitats and which will protect them from the wind. Before current knowledge of mountain lion activity had been researched, it was commonly believed that mountain lions were ferocious killers which crept down from the mountains to indulge in midnight feasts on livestock and pets. Of course, the worst harbored fear was the possibility of losing children, family and friends to these wild predators. Besides the past 25 years, little concern was given to the condition of mountain lion populations in California and much of the western United States. Between 1916 and 1971, more than 12,000 mountain lions were killed for bounties and for sport in California (California Wildlife Protection Coalition, 1995).
