Leaders must be many things. They must be the pinnacle of what their workforce would want to follow. Leaders must be accessible by the people while being above reproach at an attainable level. If leaders are not above reproach they could be dissuaded by the alternate viewpoints. It’s imperative that leaders encompass motivation and a spark of charisma to be effective and to impart vision to their employees.
In my opinion, a leader needs to be both very likeable and able to be an authoritarian on opposite sides of the spectrum. The person chosen to be the desired leader can and will make a following for themselves. If a leader can and does possess inherent likeable and good leadership qualities, then people will be willing to follow them. They will then have their people believe in them and their employees and those underneath them will look up to them and be willing to shadow their inspirations, goals and visions (Big Dog and Little Dog’s Juxtaposition, 2011). People in the workforce must have someone to follow if they are not born leaders or have been placed in a leader group. This is especially important in the workforce.
If those placed in the position of leadership are acting as leaders, then they need to be follow-worthy and people must like them. If their employee workforces do not like the leaders in authority, they won’t listen to anything that they have to say or follow their example. This follows hand in hand with their people desiring to “choose a leader with lots of prestige” (Adams, S., 2011). It is important for leaders to set an example. When employees choose a leader with prestige they are saying that they want to follow in prestigious footsteps. Leaders must be all these things because their workfor...

...2011). For these goals and concept to become an experience of the group mindset, then “a program should be developed to achieve the goal” (Big Dog and Little Dog’s Juxtaposition, 2011). When there is a framework of development it’s easy for the goal or aspiration of a business to be attained. One way that this can be implemented is for tasks to be set for the individuals in the group. Tasks are important to keep everyone in the group motivated and on the right track.

The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
In today’s society everybody wants to become the next leader, but do people really know what the qualities of a great leader are? There are many definitions and theories about what constitutes a great leader. Some say that a leader is someone who is capable of inspiring and motivating others to change. Other says a leader is someone who does not rely on their title or power to lead, but instead can use his/her personal power to guide and lead others in an effective manner. While the definition of a great leader can vary depending on whom the question is asked, there is no doubt that these definitions have some common ground. In this paper I will discuss the 5 golden rules a great leader should posses and the reasoning behind it.
Leaders show up in infinitely varying circumstances and characters. Typically, each individual has a picture of who they see as a perfect leader, but no leader is perfect for everyone. Different circumstances and different people require different character traits and styles for their leaders to be effective. The coach of a high school football team is not going to have the same character traits or leadership style as a kindergarten teacher. Not only is the scope of a leader’s character limited in the minds of individuals, but the circumstances in which a leader is needed, or in which a good leader could be found, is typically a narrow field in the minds of individuals. When good leaders come to mind, they are often pictured as outgoing, authority-demanding,
This purpose of this paper is to explore leadership and its impact on organizations. Leadership as defined by XXX is “the power or ability to lead other people”; however, how does someone develop the skills to lead others. The skills and traits a leader should possess have been studied and written about for ages and ultimately the key is that leader is not born with leadership skills the skills are fostered and honed. Due to positive and negative impacts a leaders can have on their staff and ultimately their organizations leaders have an influential impact on the moral and success of the organization and its staff. Leaders who have not developed the skills to be a leaders for their organization and staff can
Establishing goals is a required skill for management. It encompasses the ability to take into consideration systemic
Therefore the leader must look at ways to get the follower to be on board with the views and ideologies of the organization. With that in mind, leaders must set the right example to move the employee from point A to B. Leaders must embrace the term of being a role model and while they may feel that they are incompetent and lack the experience of a seasoned leader. They must envision themselves as the role model to deflect the perception by the follower they are worthy of following. The follower perception of the leader as a worthy role model is conceptually different than the standard behavior that a leader may demonstrate (Organ et al., 2006) Thus the leader must set the tone through leading by personal example which facilitates the social learning process (Manz & Sims, 1981). (Yaffe & Kark, 2011) Leaders can build trust within the organization so that employees would not question or complain about the leaders decision and trust that even though they may be young, it is in the best interest of
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
To me, leaders are constantly surrounding us. People constantly need to be led and they seek out individuals around them who have personalities that stand out – the basic qualities of leadership, the Great Man Theory. This could be in terms of their appearance, knowledge, charisma, behaviour or style. For example, popular actors/actresses might not be great leaders but they influence the thoughts of people through advertisements through their appearance and charisma. Leadership is also a process where trust of people needs to be gained and established before followers are doing things willingly and without having to use pressure. Managers are different in this aspect, as they are given authority/power and trust factor might not be required to actively participate in management, subordinates might not be performing their tasks willingly. The above idea is adopted from the most recent leadership definition by Manfred Kets de Vries, he defines leadership style as the point of interaction between the leader’s character, the follower’s character and the situation. (Manfred Kets de Vries, The Leadership Mystique, Financial Times Prentice Hall, 2001) To gain people’s trust, the first steps is to communicate, Warren Bennis observed the significance of rhetoric and eloquent, “Effective leaders put words to the formless longings and deeply felt needs of others. They create communities out of words.” (Bennis Warren, An Invented Life: Reflections on Leadership and Change, Reading, Mass, Addison-Wesly, 1993)
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
As a leader it is important to have a vision and a goal, but it is even more crucial to have followers who trust in your vision and goals. Trust is developed by displaying positive energy and attitude. Having a goal and a vision helps an organization move into the future. Without a goal or a vision an organization is going nowhere. It is bound to fail. The six steps of goal setting are vision, goals, objective, tasks, timeliness, and follow-up. Creating a mental picture of how the organization will look like in the future is the vision. When an organization has a vision, it is looking for change, growth, and improvement for the future. This vision of the future is challenging the present processes at an organization. This challenge is the first step in the process of great leadership. Leadership starts with a vision. Even Thomas Edison had a vision, a theory that gave us the light bulb. When setting goals, it is important to make sure that they are realistic, attainable, improving the organization, and having as many people involved as possible. Goal difficulty, goal spe...
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). Good leaders must utilize all of these traits in order to meet the challenges of the future. A few emerging challenges that future
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
A person needs to achieve certain goals in one's life before you can call them successful. Success is to achieve goals, you have set. I have set certain goals I would like to achieve in my lifetime. Some of these goals are personal while others are professional. My professional goals in life are to find a good job that makes me happy, get a good education, find a job that makes enough money for me to support my family, and help people. Goals it is very important for me to receive a good education. Most job fields require a descent education. If I don't have an education I would not be able to function properly at the work place and I would not understand what to do. To maintain a good job that will make good money will require me to go thorough schooling or training and maybe even both. Education is the first and foremost way to become successful, because the job I will choose will need me go to school and maybe even beyond college. My happiness in what I do is also a goal for me I my life. There is no way someone can become successful if they are not happy with what they are doing. ...
