The Global Arches business is a large global corporation that started off in America. Even with this large corporation starting in the U.S., it has branched out and is now a big part in the fast food industry around the world. When outsiders look at the American life, they see a very fast pace, overweight, and look for the easy way out and inexpensive ways. These are largely what the Golden Arches Corporation is all about. Many people see the expansion of this business as an expansion of the problems this country has. The culture around us is seen as to have a major connection with the Golden Arches Industry.
With the inspiration of America moving toward globalization, many counties feel as though they are losing out of their original culture. America is seen as pushing away the local cultures of these areas and making a new culture altogether that is created with mostly American ideals. The book states how this industry maintains a proper way of attendance at the restaurant (pay in advance, sit and eat, and leave). This way is almost to the point of trying to make other people into Americans and lead them into the same daily way of life (Page 27). Also, it is important to note that not only is the Golden Arches moving into these areas. However, many American companies are moving to these places to expand their empires. For example, Dunkin Doughnuts and Coca-Cola are all commonly seen businesses in Beijing and Seoul. These show how globalization has moved into these eastern Asian places. It is easy to see that the influences of globalization have moved the original cultures into the background and now a westernized global world is being brought forward.

Because The Golden Arches is such a large and successful company the influences on globalization are very prominent. The influences may take away some aspects of culture in certain areas but the truly important aspects will not be lost. If an aspect of culture is extremely important to a group of people they will not let the ways of another country influence them. Globalization is important to everyone because the more counties grow the more the globalized world will integrate into each person’s life. The Golden Arches and Globalization are two concepts that have helped each other to thrive throughout the past two decades.

A world without the Big Mac, Happy Meals, Chicken McNuggets, and the phrase “I’m lovin’ it,” is almost inconceivable. People around the globe have become accustomed to the high gleaming golden arches that make up the famous emblem for McDonald’s. McDonald’s has grasped the concept that culture flows from power. In this case, the American culture flows through the veins of this fast-food giant and the more that is supplied, the greater the demand. It is no secret that McDonald’s has become one of the world’s largest fast-food retailers. It has become a well known icon that has played a huge part in globalization, with chains located in many different countries… transforming the meaning of fast-food all around the world.
James Watson’s McDonald’s in Hong Kong is a textbook example of globalization. According to Webster’s dictionary, globalization is defined as “worldwide integration and development”. In McDonald’s in Hong Kong, Watson discusses a well-known and successful American fast food chain migrating over seas and embedding itself in the Hong Kong culture. Although Hong Kong was already recognized as an extremely transnational civilization, there were worries that the country would lose cultural identity. The fears were that Hong Kong would become more Americanized and lessen their ties to the Cantonese ways.
According to Royle (1999) McDonald’s is a very large multinational enterprise (MNE) and the largest food service operation in the world. Currently the company has 1.5 million workers with 23,500 stores in over 110 countries with the United Kingdom and Germany amongst the corporation’s six biggest markets, and over 12,000 restaurants in the United States. In 1974 the United Kingdom corporation was established and in 1971 the Germany corporation was established, currently the combined corporation has over 900 restaurants and close to 50,000 employees in each of these countries (Royle, 1999).

Globalization is said "to have transformed the structure and scale of human relationships that social, cultural, political, and economic processes now operate at a global scale with a consequent reduction in the significance of other geographical scales. "(The Dictionary of human geography 2004:315) Globalization has had both positive and negative effects on a local, national, international and global level. Globalization often brings benefits at one level which cause negative effects at another, these results and the scale at which they manifest are often uncertain and unpredictable.

It is even given the phrase “Land of opportunity.” This is one of the reasons people from different parts of the world choose to immigrate to the United States. Immigrants do not immigrate alone, but bring their cultures with them. As Globalization began to show more of its negative effects on those lives of the individuals in developing countries, it became more evident that because of this globalization people on every continent and territory were exposed to and forced to consume a North American culture.
Globalisation can take on many different shapes and forms in its free flow of goods and services across national borders. Cultural globalisation is one of those forms. Capcioglu (2008) refers to cultural globalisation as a “Global circulation of information, signs and symbols on a global scale and the reactions shown to the various socio-cultural transformations as a result of these conflicts.” Ritzer and Barber (1996) first coined cultural globalisation as ‘Americanisation’ and ‘McDonaldisation’, referring to the spread of western culture from the United States across the globe. The American image was beamed around the globe in the 1950’s and 1960’s through Disney cartoons, music videos, television programs, Hollywood movies and products such as McDonalds and Coca Cola. The global appeal of these goods and services was centred on the fact that America is seen as the place of modernity around the world. It is a culture that is rich, powerful and exciting and thus captures global appeal.
Globalization’s history is extremely diversified and began during the beginning of civilization. Now we live in a world that is constantly evolving, demanding people to use resources in locations that are very difficult to obtain certain resources. This could make it completely impossible to operate in these specific parts of the world. However, globalization allows people across the world to acquire much needed resources. Globalization creates the opportunity for businesses to take advantage and exploit the ability to take part of their business to a different country. Nevertheless, globalization is part of today’s society and will be involved in virtually all situations.
