Written in 1944, Tennessee Williams wrote a play during World War II when people were barely making ends meet. Centering on the Wingfield family, the story consisted of five characters: Amanda Wingfield (the mother), Laura Wingfield (the daughter), Tom Wingfield (son, narrator, Laura’s older brother), Jim Connor (Tom and Laura’s old acquaintance from high school) and Mr. Wingfield (father to Tom and Laura, and Amanda’s husband)- who abandoned the family long before the start of the play. The title, “The Glass Menagerie”, represented a collection of glass animals on display in the Wingfields’ home. At one point or another, these animals then represented each character when they couldn’t accept reality. The theme of this play were about the characters’ struggles to accept the truth while using major events in their lives to change their perception and make them understand the real world.

Laura, the only daughter in the family, had the hardest time opening up to people. Laura was portrayed as a puzzled child throughout the play and received the most attention from the other characters throughout the play. “The first time we have a speed test, she broke down completely-was sick at the stomach and almost had to be carried into the washroom! After that morning she never showed up” (Williams, Scene 2, 979). Laura’s shyness kept her from succeeding academically. For example when Amanda enrolled her into business school, she dropped out a couple of weeks later and ended up wandering around the city alone so that her mother wouldn’t find out. Laura at one point was so hindered by her shyness that she couldn’t look or face her mother while speaking. Instead she innocently asked her mother not to stare at her, when Amanda was only showing h...

...mber to accept the reality they were in, all through different results even though they all shared the same lifestyle. Laura’s escape to a perfect world was through her glass menagerie and while she had accepted her ‘shyness’ and experienced a moment with high self-esteem, it was highly likely that she would build on and regain her confidence. With Amanda, her realization came about when she stopped pushing Laura and Tom to do something for the riches and just focused on making her children happy. While Amanda was deeply flawed, Tom was too when he tried to escape his lifestyle by joining “The Union of Merchant Seamen”. Connor on the other hand, saved his relationship and probable marriage by straightening out the kiss incident and telling Laura about his fiancé. In the end, Williams made all characters accept what they were running away from in one way or another.
