Geoffrey Chaucer was a poet, a writer, and of course a diplomat. Geoffrey Chaucer was born in the early hours of 1340s to John Chaucer, a vintner and assistant to the king's butler. As a boy, he was a leaf to the Countess of Ulster. (Lombardi) Chaucer was the most famous for writing his unfinished Canterbury tales. (Geoffrey Chaucer) He was born in London, only problem is, the exact date and place are unknown. From his writings Chaucer emerges as poet of love, both worldly and heavenly. No information exists about his early education, although without a doubt he would have been as good in French as in the Middle English of his time. Chaucer's very first poem was “The Book of the Duchess”. A poem of over 1,300 lines, the poem was originally a funeral song for the Duchess of Lancaster.(GradeSaver) This poem was published in 1370. To write The Book of Duchess Chaucer used a new style of writing, a “Dream-Vision”. This new genre was a type of 13th-century love poem, which Chaucer translated into English. (GradeSaver) During the next twelve or fifteen years there was no question that Chaucer was constantly engaged in writing new stories, though for the first part of his stories he had no job, no income was available. Chaucer is a medieval author best known for his witty Canterbury Tales. He “was born between 1340 and 1345, probably in London. His father was a “prosperous wine merchant” (BBC). Drawing inspiration from what he had experienced in his lifetime, Chaucer wrote about his problems with a series of short stories, named the Canterbury Tales. These tales are abnormal, due to being written in English, instead of Latin, like most stories of that period.

Chaucer was a very important man in his time. He opened people’s eyes to the corruption within the church. He also is considered by many to be the father of the English language. Geoffrey Chaucer was born around 1340, in London, Great Britain. He was a court writer during the rule of Edward III and Richard II. He had many acquaintances within nobles of that time. During his job, court writer, he observed the immoralities in the court, and as a reaction wrote his works. His purpose of his works was to entertain, and he mostly used the English language in order to deliver his work to as many people (to both noble, and not noble people) as possible, because French was the noble language, and English was a speaking language. One of the most recognized attribute of Chaucer’s narrative was the ability to create characters that embodied features distant from the fiction, making them very real and believable through the writing. To verify this statement it is necessary to examine Chaucer’s work. The most celebrated of them is the collection of stories "The Canterbury Tales" (originally written in Middle English) which were the last work of Geoffrey Chaucer and perhaps the best of the middle ages in England. Therefore, for literary reasons, three characters were taken for an analysis to distinguish the level of transcendence recognized (if any) in their inner and outer lives.
Geoffrey Chaucer was born in the early 1340's, in approximately 1343. Little is known about Chaucer's early life. According to Microsoft Encarta, "there is relatively strong evidence to support the fact that he attended one of the three grammar-schools: either St. Paul's, St. Mary-le-Bow's, or St. Martin-le-Grand's. The next reliable bit of data places him, at around the age of fourteen, as a page in the household of the wife of Prince Lionel, the third son of Edward III. Two of the greatest masters of British literature, Shakespeare and Chaucer, tended to look to the classics when searching for inspiration. A lesser-known example of this lies in an ancient tale from Greece about two star-crossed lovers. There are many variations on the names of these lovers, but for the purpose of solidarity, they shall henceforth be referred to as “Troilus and Criseyde” for Chaucer and “Troilus and Cressida” for Shakespeare. Chaucer’s “Troilus and Criseyde” offers up a classic tale of love that is doomed, whereas Shakespeare’s “Troilus and Cressida” is not only tragic but also biting in its judgment and representation of characters. This difference may be due to the differences in time periods for the two authors, or their own personal dispositions, but there can be no denying the many deviations from Chaucer’s work that Shakespeare employs. Shakespeare’s work, by making the characters and situations more relatable, builds upon Chaucer’s original work, rather than improving it or shattering it.
The Canterbury Tales is a literary work written by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400. The story takes place during the fourteenth century and tells the story of a group of thirty people making a pilgrimage to pay their respect at the Cathedral in Canterbury, where Saint Thomas a Becket was assassinated. This story is seen through the eyes of Chaucer the pilgrim, who is along for the odyssey. It consists of a collection of smaller stories told by the pilgrims in order to pass the time on this journey to Canterbury. Geoffrey Chaucer, known as the father of English Literature, is widely considered the Middle Ages’ greatest English poet. He wrote The Canterbury Tales in poetic form. It was originally written in Middle English, but has since been translated.
