Gay Marriage Should Be Legal in All States

The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. Yet, same-sex marriage continues to be a highly debated issue. George Chauncey gives a road map of the history of marriage equality in his article “The Long Road to Marriage Equality,” same-sex marriage has always existed but became a hot issue in the 1970's. In the 70's the Supreme Court of the United States in the state of Minnesota upheld a lower court's decision that denying a marriage license to same-sex couple did not violate the United States Constitution. American children are educated that the United States of America is one of the best countries around that is until you look at our past to see that we enslaved races, killed because we did not like someone, and are not allowing people to marry because they are the same-sex (Chauncey). Marriage equality needs to be legal at the federal level because it creates a lack of identity, no one’s rights are infringed upon except those who are not allowed to marry, and same-sex couples need the same benefits as heterosexual couples.

Marriage is important to homosexual couples because without marriage equality they feel like their identity in not important because they are not equal. TV shows demonstrate the opposite of how many same-sex couples feel about marriage; they express same-sex couples about not worrying about marriage. American Dad is a good example of this because they have a gay couple as anchors and they never talk about marriage. They do discuss how the government only sees them as buddies because the government does not recognize their relationship.
