“So, you’ve come to stare at the BEAST, haven’t you?”

There is a theory that dream and myth are related which is conveyed through the writing of Douglas Angus’ Kafka's Metamorphosis and "The Beauty and the Beast" Tale and supported by Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. The stories are very symbolic when conveying the metamorphosis of a human being. Unlike Beauty and the Beast, in the Metamorphosis some suggest love is received through acts of cruelty yet in actuality it appears that cruelty results in heartache. Due to being a beast, the repulsiveness requires genuine love which can achieve the “magical transformation.” This “magical transformation” is not achieved and creates a twist in the plot derived from the concepts in the “Beauty and the Beast.”

Douglas Angus conveys the similarities between Gregor to the story “The Beauty and the Beast” through his writing (Kafka's Metamorphosis and "The Beauty and the Beast" Tale). Gregor and the Beast were important at one point in time, especially to the people around them. Due to unfortunate circumstances which involve their transformations they disgust everyone. The Beast wasn’t always a beast, but in actuality a prince who refused to shelter an enchantress because she disguised herself as an ugly beggar with an unattractive appearance. This relieves his shallowness and evil heart which cursed and transformed him into a beast. As a result, the Beast hides in his castle and his curse can only be broken if his love for someone is return. The Beast hides successfully in his castle for many years until he is revealed to the town by Beauty. The “Beauty and the Beast” and the “Metamorphosis” are similar in concept of death, yet love does not bring Gregor back to life, but instead the Samsa family. At the beginning of the story Gregor doesn’t appear to love his family, he seemed to be trapped. Yet “he thought back on his family with deep emotion and love.”(Kafka) In a sense the Samsa family had become the Beast, and required love in order to have a “magical transformation”. The love from Gregor allowed the Samsa family, especially Grete to end the story with a sense of rebirth/transformation. (Cycle)
