Frank Mccourt was born on August 19th, 1930 in New York to Irish immigrants, Angela and Malachy, at the start of the Great Depression. After struggling to make ends meet in New York, his parents decided to move to Limerick, Ireland when Frank was four years old. Upon arriving in Ireland his family was hoping for a better life, but ended up in worse circumstances than in America. At nineteen years old, Frank earned enough money to return back to America and leave his family behind. When he got back he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War. Later on, he received his master’s degree in Education and taught high school English for thirty years. After spending countless years of his life enriching the lives of high school students, he passed away on July 19th, 2009 (“Frank McCourt Bio”). Angela’s Ashes is a memoir of Frank Mccourt’s life and the obstacles he overcame, while leaving his story behind to show the sufferings of Ireland and teach the importance of studying world literature.

Evan King Mrs. Madis English 12-2 14 January 2015 Making Something Out Of Nothing Making the most out of life is hard, especially life as a poor child in Ireland would have kept most people from reaching their goals in life but not for Frank McCourt, did not play into the stereotypes of many poor Irish people of that time. In the Memoir Angela’s Ashes written by Frank McCourt Frank has to persevere through much adversity in his not so desirable life as a poor Irish boy with a drunk for a father who could not provide for Frank and his family. Frank must get a job at a young age in order to bring in the money that his father Malachy drinks away, when he finally has money and moves to America, and when he eventually becomes a teacher even with all of his bad experiences as a child in school.
The first barrier to a better life had to do with surviving poverty or the absence of certain privileges. The title of this book is Angela’s Ashes. The title doesn’t make a lot of sense because the story about Angela’s cremation and her lost ashes is found in part two of the book. However, ashes do appear in the book in relation to Angela. An example of this would be the ashes from Angela’s Woodbine cigarettes. And another example would be Angela sitting next to the ashes from the fireplace during hard times.
Growing up in Limerick, in his memoir Angela’s Ashes, Frank McCourt describes the continuing difficulties The McCourt’s face in 1930’s with World War II going into motion after in the early 1940s. Frankie goes through many changes as he progresses through his childhood. He is enrolled in Catholic school, with many rigorous Headmasters with a seemingly sole purpose of belittling the students. His family were very poor and moved from America to Limerick to try and live an easier life. Frank’s father was constantly out of a job and never had enough money to support his family and friends.
...e, and death, the tone is humorous and matches the age of the narrator. As the narrator becomes older in age, the tone gets progressively serious continuing to balance. The meaning of the title “Angela’s Ashes” is controversial; though, I think it refers to his mother, Angela. His mother invariably looks poor, defeated and broken down. I view her as a metaphor for a typical Irish mother in the 1930s of limerick that didn’t have any opportunities to get a job or make money to provide for their indigent families. Angela lacks pride and regularly “stares into the dead ashes of the fire place” which represents her displeasure and culpability for her poor family (McCourt 253). Although Frank McCourt struggled through a harsh childhood, he successfully accomplished his dream of coming to America where he emerged as a successful, vivid writer and author of Angela’s Ashes.
The various settings of " Angela’s Ashes" effect the characters’ actions and lifestyle in various ways. Living in poverty challenges the family to meet basic needs through begging and stealing as well as children getting jobs to help the situation. Also, the poor housing causes the family to be subjected to disease and coldness. The society the McCourts were part of causes the family to be aware of social prejudice and learn actions to take in order to protect their rights. The setting of the book influences the McCourt family’s actions and style of living.
The Theme of Religion in Angela’s Ashes Throughout the novel, religion is presented as being of extreme importance in Irish society, influencing the beliefs and actions of the characters. I will attempt to highlight the several factors which I believe make up the presentation of religion in “Angela’s Ashes”. From the beginning of the book, religion is said to make up a large part of the unhappy childhood Frank suffered. The following quote shows the extent of Frank’s sentiments: “Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood, is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood” The quote above portrays the crescendo of negative emotion, describing the worse possible scenario of a childhood, adding finally “Catholic” to signify the most terrible part of the childhood Frank suffered.
The division between Northern and Southern Ireland dates back to the 16th century. A succession of English monarchs had used the planting of Protestant English and Scottish people on lands seized from Irish Catholics as a way of increasing loyalty to the British Crown. This is an example of how the British treated the people of Ireland unfairly.
Ireland has a very conflicted history. Just when that history may seem to take a turn for the better, it seems that there is always another event to keep the trend of depression ongoing. The separation of the Protestant and Catholic Church would be the center of these events. However, the two different groups could potentially work together for the betterment of the nation. Through an analysis of why Protestants and Catholics split in the first place, disadvantages that Catholics would face in the coming years and also how these disadvantages were lifted, an argument will be developed in that there is perhaps the chance that they may end up working together in the future for the betterment of Ireland. Although these two groups would fight over the countless decades, they need to join into one entity if they wish to see a better future for Ireland.
Angela’s Ashes, by Frank McCourt is a genuine memoir that vividly tells the story of a young, Irish Catholic boy during the 1930’s and early 1940’s. Frank’s memory of his impoverished childhood is difficult to accept, however, he injects a sense of devilish humor into his biography. He creates a story where the readers watch him grow beyond all odds and live through the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. “People everywhere brag and whimper about the woes of their early years, but nothing can compare with the Irish version: the poverty, the shiftless loquacious alcoholic father; the pious defeated mother moaning by the fire; pompous priests; bullying schoolmasters; the English and the terrible things they did to us for eight hundred long years”(McCourt 11). His interaction with his family proves that despite the hunger and pain, love and strength come out of misery. Although the book tells the experience of an individual, the story itself is universal.

Despite Frank McCourt's horrid poverty, tiresome starvation and devastating losses, Angela's Ashes is not a tragic memoir. It is in fact up lifting, funny and at times triumphant. How does Frank McCourt as a writer accomplish this?
... It is estimated over these five horrifying years, that around two million Irish died. One million deaths are attributed to starvation while another million is attributed to immigration and sickness. It has taken many years for the Irish to recover the loss of 25% of their population, many of these deaths being children and the elderly. This led to an immense age gap in the general population. The Irish have also been to slow to recover from the emotional and political toll that the famine had on Ireland’s people. To remember and learn from past mistakes, the Irish built an Irish Potato Famine Memorial in Dublin. It has grotesque statues of starving people walking down the Custom House Quay carrying what little belongings they had left. This is a haunting reminder of what hunger and greed can do to a country and how it’s influence can spread across the entire world.
One of the most closely watched and widely debated conflict of our time is the one occurring In Northern Ireland. It has been a hot debate for over a century now, yet the root of the conflict is still unclear. There have been many theories over time, yet none have been able to adequately describe what is really happening on the matter.
