Francis Marion,or the “Swamp Fox” is the king of guerilla warfare. Which made him vital to the American Revolution. Other reasons why Francis Marion was so important to the Revolution was because of all of the things he did for the patriot cause. He fought in so many wars down in the South and is one of the main reason we won the Revolutionary War. Lastly Francis Marion was important because of his dedication to the Revolution and to his country (u-s-history).
Francis Marion was born near Georgetown in Berkeley County, South Carolina in 1732. As a young child he did not get a very good education but lived on several plantations including St. George and Eutaw Springs. At the age of 15 he went to sea with his brother and the blessings of his parents and shipwrecked near Georgetown and the West Indies. He was then was taken care of by the colonists. Soon after he fought in the French and Indian War in 1760 and served under William Moultrie against the Cherokee. After being at war he became a successful planter at St. John’s Parish. Soon he bought a plantation on the Santee River. In 1775 when the war broke out, he became very important in the Patriot cause by being elected to the South Carolina Provincial Congress, fighting in many wars in the South under Moultrie again, and fighting in Fort Sullivan and in Fort Moultrie . In september 1778 he was commissioned as the commander of South Carolina Second State Regiment..The next year he fought under Benjamin Lincoln in the second battle of the savannah called the Siege of Savannah. After the British victory at the battle of Camden in 1780 he lead lots of successful nighttime guerrilla warfare attacks against the British in the lowcountry and backcountry. “Promises that you make to yourself are often like the Japanese plum tree- they bear no fruit,” said Francis Marion. The youngest son of six children from Gabriel and Esther Marion was born in 1732 at the family plantation in Berkeley County, South Carolina, whose name was soon to be Francis Marion. The Marion family moved to a plantation in St. George when Francis was only a toddler so that the children could receive an education in Georgetown, SC. When Francis turned fifteen, he decided to take a job as a sailor and register as the sixth crewman on a schooner, which is a type of sailing vessel with several masts. After a voyage to the West Indies, on the trip back the ship was reported to be hit by whale and sunken. After a week in a small boat under the blazing sun, two men have died due to exposure and dehydration, while the Marion and the rest have survived and made it back to shore. Soon to come throughout Francis Marion’s life more adventurous scenarios will been seen and greatly affect America’s history which will show how Francis Marion receives the nickname the ,”Swap Fox.”

He was the son of Sir Thomas Chapman and Sarah Junner. The couple never married, but instead they took the name of Lawrence. The family decided to settle in Oxford. This is where Thomas Edward grew up, went to school, and eventually attended university. At Oxford, Lawrence decided to study history, and he also wanted to do his undergraduate thesis on medieval castles in the Turkish- held area of Syria and Palestine.

The French made a lasting imprint in history because of their participation in the Revolutionary War. For the Siege of Savannah, however, one of the most crucial times when it was needed in the South, the French did not meet up with their expectations due to a combination of bad luck and strategical mistakes.
