Francis Marion: The King of Guerilla Warfare

Francis Marion,or the “Swamp Fox” is the king of guerilla warfare. Which made him vital to the American Revolution. Other reasons why Francis Marion was so important to the Revolution was because of all of the things he did for the patriot cause. He fought in so many wars down in the South and is one of the main reason we won the Revolutionary War. Lastly Francis Marion was important because of his dedication to the Revolution and to his country (u-s-history).

Francis Marion was born near Georgetown in Berkeley County, South Carolina in 1732. As a young child he did not get a very good education but lived on several plantations including St. George and Eutaw Springs. At the age of 15 he went to sea with his brother and the blessings of his parents and shipwrecked near Georgetown and the West Indies. He was then was taken care of by the colonists. Soon after he fought in the French and Indian War in 1760 and served under William Moultrie against the Cherokee. After being at war he became a successful planter at St. John’s Parish. Soon he bought a plantation on the Santee River. In 1775 when the war broke out, he became very important in the Patriot cause by being elected to the South Carolina Provincial Congress, fighting in many wars in the South under Moultrie again, and fighting in Fort Sullivan and in Fort Moultrie . In september 1778 he was commissioned as the commander of South Carolina Second State Regiment..The next year he fought under Benjamin Lincoln in the second battle of the savannah called the Siege of Savannah. After the British victory at the battle of Camden in 1780 he lead lots of successful nighttime guerrilla warfare attacks against the British in the lowcountry and backcountry. ...t in America being a free country like it is today. He did so much like leading and being a big part of guerilla warfare in militias. Also all the things he did for America and it being free. Like being in so many wars and being the reason for winning them. Lastly Francis Marion was important because of his dedication to the Revolution and to his country.
