This experiment was based on rats and pigeons and wanted B.F Skinner wanted to make them learn fast. Schedules of Reinforcement is how often a response happens from either a reinforcement or punishment. He used different schedules to figure out the best way. The two schedules used are: The first schedule is continuous reinforcement. This is when Reinforcement and punishment are giving all the time, instead of some of the time. The second schedule is partial reinforcement. This is when Reinforcement and punishment are given some of the time, instead of all the time. There are four types of partial reinforcement and this is focused on either ratio or interval. There are also fixed or variable, that are subtypes of ratio and schedules.

Ego is keeping both the id and the superego satisfied, so balancing them out. Id is to satisfy psychological needs, known to be ‘the animal in you’. Superego is about being an ideal person, leading the person to strive to who they want to be. A metaphor commonly used is id is known to be the devil and the superego a angel. Carl Jung had the idea extroverts and introverts. A extrovert is the person who is confident and like talking or being in a group of people. Introverts are the opposite, they like being by themselves and think before talking, so it is worth listening to them.
Defence mechanisms for anxiety
This is the idea that when an ego is under threat, anxiety occurs. There are many defence mechanisms people use to help their anxieties, some common Defence mechanisms are denial, regression and suppression. Some real life examples of this are refusing to think you are fat, when you obsessively are. This Defence mechanism is denial(saying something that you know is not true. Another example is getting really angry and throwing things around. This is regression(going back to things you did in your childhood). All of these examples relate back to what you do when your ego is under attack.

The instinctual drive is the inner source. The id is created at birth and it is also the basic life form which the ego and superego then starts to differ from one another. Since the id has instinctual drives, the individual’s body then starts to crave things. This is where addiction comes to play. The ego comes from the id to satisfy the individual’s needs and the superego is like the conscience. It separates wrong from right. Patients tend to think that these addictions helps them cope with their problems.

This course has taught me a lot about the different personality theories as well as the best known psychology theorists that have developed these theories. Personality consists of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make an individual unique. Numerous theories have been emerged to implicit the different features of personality. The main purpose of some theories is to focus on explaining how personality developed.
In its most basic form, personality is what defines a person through their “…expression of emotions, relationship building, and their individual patterns of behavior…” (CITE). Two of the most prolific theories on the formation of personality were developed by neurologist Sigmund Freud and psychologist Carl Rogers. Both Freud and Rogers worked in psychotherapy, the area of therapy, which “…focuses on fostering a positive mental well-being…” (CITE). These men based their general theories of personality on their experiences with patients, however their conclusions are worlds apart. Rogers is recognized for his approach to therapy where the “…client…” has a more direct role in the process (CITE). Whereas Freud is best known for his work on the unconscious mind.
Personality-This are characteristically patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that makes a person to be unique from other individuals. It mainly consists of who you are, who you have been and what you will become. There are a number of different theories that have emerged to explain different aspects of personality. Some focus on explaining how personality develops while others focus on individual differences in personality. According to Freud, the mind is divided into the conscious mind which is composed of all things we are aware of and the unconscious mind which has things we are not aware of. He also goes on and divides the human personality into: the identity, Ago and the superego. He terms the Identity as the most primitive part and it’s the source of all the basic wants. It is generally unconscious and hence serves as the main source of libidinal energy. Ego component focuses on reality matters and ensures satisfaction of the identity in a realistic manner that is safe and socially accepted. The superego component holds internalized behavior and standards we learn from the surrounding environment like our parents and society. Freud came up with four stages of psychosexuality: Oral, Anal, Phallic and Genital. At each stage different parts of the body are able to produce pleasure hence they serve as the main source of pleasure, frustration and self-expression. The purpose of this paper is to analysis how different personality theorists could interoperate different individual circumstances and behaviors based on case examples provided by the instructor.

In the field of psychology, trait theory is considered to be a key approach to the study of human personality (Crowne, 2007; Burton, Westen & Kowalski, 2009). Skinner is a major contributor to the Behavioral Theory of personality, a theory that states that our learning is shaped by positive and negative reinforcement, punishment, modeling, and observation. An individual acts in a certain way, a.k.a. gives a response, and then something happens after the response. In order for an action to be repeated in the future, what happens after the response either encourages the response by offering a reward that brings pleasure or allows an escape from a negative situation. The former is known as positive reinforcement, the latter known as negative reinforcement (Sincero, 2012). A teenager who received money for getting an “A” is being positively reinforced, while an individual who skips a class presentation is being negatively reinforced by escaping from the intense fear and anxiety that would have occurred during the presentation.
