Statistics have proven that dentists have one of the highest suicide rates out of all of the other occupations in America. Dentists' jobs can be very repetitive. For the most part, they perform the same procedures in the same environment every day. Their patients can often be boring or hard to deal with, and worst of all they will deal with patients looking to sue for dental malpractice. If bad enough, this can put them out of business. As many people know, there are dental specialties such as; orthodontists, prosthodontists, pedodonists, periodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The most unrecognized dental specialty is forensic odontology. Forensic odontologists are dentists that work in the field of forensic science. Forensic odontology offers the widest variety of working conditions out of all of the other dental specialties.
Not many people realize this, but forensic odontology goes all the way back to the 18th century. Paul Revere is mainly known for his famous phrase, “the British are coming,” but he is not very well known for being a dentist. In fact, he was the first forensic odontologist in the United States. Paul Revere identified the body of Dr. Joseph Warren ten months after his death. Revere did this by examining the dentition. When he did this he noticed the bridge of silver and ivory that he himself had installed two years previously (biology-online).
If Paul Revere does not give a name to forensic odontology, then maybe the most famous case involving forensic odontology will. The famous serial killer, Ted Bundy, was put away by evidence gathered by a forensic odontologist. Bundy left a bite mark on the buttock of one of his victims. Photographs were taken of the bite mark, and the police...

Dentistry is a fascinating profession for its approach to patients, restoring function as well as es-thetic. I believe that Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the most important specialty in dentistry and medicine which combines art with science. It is appealing when patients leave the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) clinics not only with good function and esthetic, but also in a better psychological status. And I find the AAOMS’s motto “Saving Faces.. Changing Lives..” very insi...
Odontology is when the use of dental knowledge is used to help solve a crime. Souviron’s use of this technique left no doubt in the court room. This was one of the main reasons for Bundy to be finally convicted of the Chi Omega murders. The number of murders by Ted Bundy will forever be a mystery, but with the use of Odontology, we can guarantee at least one murder done by Bundy.
Forensic anthropology is the study of bones in relation to a criminal investigation. Some have probably seen it used on television, but this is not an accurate portrayal of what this truly is. Many times, this area of forensic science is hidden from the public eye; people only get to see all of the glamorous parts. What they do not see is all of the hard work and effort that is put in to get the job correctly done. This career is a rare decision for someone to choose, because of the lack of opportunity for employment positions as well as the low income per year; however, it is an extremely fascinating occupation. Forensic anthropology has been known to help many organizations, including museums, and law enforcement agencies.
The variety of dental instruments that have been invented since the beginning of basic dentistry till modern times is enormous. Dentistry has been around since the Ancient Egyptians, the firsts known dentist was Hesy-Re, who has inscribed on one of his tomb walls “the greatest of those who deal with teeth”. Onward from Hesy-Re, the focus on dental health became a concern, however, it was not till about the end of the 1700’s that dentistry was regarded as true profession. Dentistry during the American Civil War was not the initial interest of the time, the focus was of course on the injured men who would come off the battle field. When one thinks of Civil War medicine they may tend to think of amputations and treating bullet wounds. However,
On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Katherine Stang, Aresh Kabirnavaei, and Andrew Roller, all students in the Master’s of Forensic Science program gave thesis presentations to the Forensic Seminar Class. The following paragraphs will summarize each topic.
In this article they interview a dentist Dr. Eric Salmon DDS he talks about the lack of understanding of how to properly care for the teeth and mouth. People including medical doctors do not realize the role the mouth plays in our overall health. He also shares an experience that he went through with a medical doctor who could not figure out why he was sick until one day he found that he had a hole in one of his back molar.
I decided to do my research report on dentistry because it is a perfect blend of science and art. It is a science in that you must fully comprehend on the different types of diagnostic and procedures you are doing. It is an art in that you are constantly working with your hands to create a beautiful smile. The impact you make on helping a person achieve an impeccable smile is not one to compare with materialistic things like money or cars. People often mistake dentist as only doing practices when in fact they could do more, like research. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to interview Dr. Sarah Pham, DDS, a close family friend who practices dentistry in her own private office in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Pham was
Forensic Art is a sometimes misunderstood and ignored resource for the law enforcement community. Starting with what Forensic Art is defined as, most commonly, it is perceived as any art that can or is used in law enforcement or legal proceedings. This field has several recognized skill sets most prevalent of which are demonstrative evidence, crime scene/composite sketches, image modification/ identification, and postmortem or facial reconstruction. Having a history stretching back to the 1800s forensic art has grown and improved over the course of the following years. First giving a brief history on where forensic art started and then following with some of the benefits each skill set of forensic art provides to the law enforcement community. I will try to show the progression of forensic art and how it can be used by modern law enforcement.
Abnormal wear of tooth surfaces was an orthodontic problem early on, even ancient people wanted straight teeth! To close gaps, it has been construed that catgut did the work now done by today’s orthodontic wire. In 400-500 BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle both ruminated about ways to level teeth and fix many dental conditions. It should be noted that in Medieval times, expert barbers often performed dental “operations”, extractions, and procedures such as blood-letting. In seventeen twenty-eight, French Dentist Pierre Fauchard published a book called “The Surgeon Dentist” about ways to straighten and align teeth. He used a device called a “Bandeau,” a horse-shaped piece of precious metal which helped...
To get an overview of other specialties I shadowed an implant specialist and an endodontist, where the dentist’s team working skills and the essential role of dental nurses became emphasised, in order to streamline the increasingly complex
Nowadays the practice of dentistry is becoming more challenging and complex because of the information explosion regarding dental materials and equipment, increasing need for continuous professional development and an increasingly litigious society. Hence there has been a paradigm shift towards evidence-based healthcare .

Endodontics is a subspecialty of dentistry that specifically deals with problems of the tooth pulp. Endodontists specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders or injuries to the pulp in order to save the tooth. Some of the structures that accompany the tooth pulp include the blood vessels, nerves and soft tissue that traverse
Choosing a particular profession is one of the most important decisions that we take in our life. .In my opinion, I would like to focus on a career that is enjoyable, productive, creative and simultaneously allows you to work for the betterment of humanity. According to me, one of the most productive and fulfilling career that provides you various opportunities to help and promote humanity is that of a dentist. The earliest discovery of dentistry can be found 25,000 years ago in the skulls of Cro-Magnon people. Tooth decay was found in the skulls of the people displaying the beginning of the discovery of dentistry. Later on dental art among the Egyptians developed. 4,000 years before the Christian era in Egypt inhabitants of the valley of the Nile were well advanced, where civilization first took its rise.
