The Portuguese manager and self-proclaimed 'Special One' Jose Mourinho earns £11.7m a year, with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini in second place making £10.8m. Former Chelsea manager Luis Felipe Scolari, now coaching at little-known big spenders Bunyodkor in Uzbekistan, comes in third earning £8.5m. These earnings are because football managers are directly responsible for the performance of their team, and as a result, the success of the club on and off the pitch. Sport management and in particular football management is said to be the system of planning, organizing, actuating and controlling the resources for the efficient and effective delivery of soccer products services and results. However before a manger can perform his tasks he must first be able to access the performance of his team at all times, and herein outlines his first task in successfully managing his team.
In football many indicators help to access the performance of any team after any given match. The most common performance indicator in football is referred to as the score line, which compares the number of goals scored between competing teams, and ultimately determines the winner of the match. In soccer management this is referred to as the bottom line indicator and only gives a very basic assessment of the team’s performance. Youth Soccer has evolved into a fiercely competitive arena. More and more children are leaving recreational leagues to play in highly competitive select leagues. Select leagues are made up of teams, which players must tryout or be selected to play for. I had the unfortunate task of being an evaluator at such a tryout. Fifty ten-year-old boys had come out for a three day tryout in which forty five of them were placed on three teams. Cuts were made on the field and for those boys who had made a team it was a very exciting, but for the five boys who were cut it was absolutely heartbreaking.
