Why The University Of Southern Indiana Should Follow A Gluten Free Diet

Food allergies, particularly gluten, are more common now than ever because of the increased quality of medical testing and the decreased quality of food. Many people who follow a gluten-free diet have Celiac’s Disease, gluten intolerance, or are following a fad diet. The University of Southern Indiana currently does not meet the dietary needs of students who must follow a gluten-free diet. The University of Southern Indiana should accommodate to those who need to be on a gluten-free diet because the meal plan is expensive, the accommodations would be cheap and easy, and the number of people following a gluten-free diet is greatly increasing. The current price of a meal plan is approximately 2,000 dollars per semester, for the average college …show more content…

The number one college was The University of Notre Dame (O'Sullivan). They have unlimited gluten-free products available at the main dining halls, campus convenient store, and on campus restaurants. The University of Notre Dame’s allergy webpage states that gluten free bread, pizza, pasta, waffles, desserts, and many other items are available for anyone following a gluten-free diet (“Food Services”). It is not just Notre Dame, many other colleges and universities are offering gluten-free modifications. Hopefully with time The University of Southern Indiana will meet the needs of their students like many other universities have. With the anticipated cost increase of the meal plan, the ability to make cheap and easy gluten-free modifications, and the rise of gluten-free followers The University of Southern Indiana should implement gluten-free options. Though cross-contamination may represent an obstacle that the university does not want to battle, as it would hold them responsible for food allergy mishaps.
