Food Choices or Food Forces?
Will I be healthy by going to buy groceries and making a real meal or just go through the drive-thru and pick something up? These are food choices everyone makes every single day often even three times a day. However, there is another food choice we make besides this; it’s the choice to finish the meal and what to do with the leftovers. We often do not even realize, but so much food is being thrown away every single day as “we throw away over four million apples every day.”(Barilla, 1) Even hearing these statistics makes me feel guilty about throwing away a single piece of food or giving in and allowing myself to over buy to satisfy my cravings. It is fairly obvious if you look into any of their trash cans after a week or even going to the school’s cafeteria or hub. Within each trashcan, there is food scraps, old meat, “expired” produce or leftovers. Even at the school’s cafeteria the trash can is filled the with leftovers and discarded food. Without even realizing it college students are essentially throwing money into the trash. Why are these students unintentionally harming the environment, wasting money and food, and promoting the grocery store culture? Lead with an Example
University of California, Riverside has signs all over the school of different advertisements to save the earth. However, so much food is still going to waste as in an interview with the workers at the dining hall they said that “it depended on the chef that day” as many either did not care and threw into the trash or “some chefs like to make sure the food is donated”. It isn’t just the students that do not care or are uninformed, but also the on-campus chefs.
