Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are good for you and what they do to help the body function.
Food is anything we consume, whether it is for taste or for nutritional value. The nutritional value of a food is the value the food gives to the body to function. To identify whether a food has poor or good nutritional value, people use a nutrition facts chart. These charts can display the amount of fat, sugar, calories, fiber, carbohydrates, cholesterol, calories, and more.

All of these substances serve one purpose or another when consumed into the body. Carbohydrates, for example, are broken down in the body to provide energy for the body to perform reactions and to regain stamina. Protein helps muscles to recover stronger than before as well as help skin and hair cells to develop. Some substances, such as fat and sugar, can be misinterpreted as being harmful to the body. However, fats and sugars are vital to the human body and without them certain processes within the body could not take place ("What's In Food", Nutriti...

Melanocytes, embryologically derived from the neural crest, are distributed in the epidermis and thus are found throughout the skin. They produce a brown pigment known as melanin and are responsible for racial variation in skin color and also the color of moles. Malignant degeneration of the melanocyte gives rise to the tumor, melanoma, of which there are four subtypes. These are: superficial spreading, nodular, lentigo maligna, and acral lentiginous melanomas, accounting for 70%, 15% to 30%, 4% to 10%, and 2% to 8% of cases, respectively. Malignant melanoma may develop anywhere on the body. In men, it is most common on the trunk. In women, it is most common on the back or legs. The subtype also may influence where the tumor develops, lentigo melanoma is more common on the face while acral lentiginous melanoma is more common on the palms of the hand, soles of the feet, or in the nail beds.
In melanoma some common signs and symptoms are the doctor may notice an abnormal area in the skin that may look unusual. A mole, sore, lump, or growth on the skin can be a sign of melanoma. A sore or growth that bleeds, or changes in skin coloring may also be a sign of skin cancer. Your doctor may run several test to detect if melanoma is...
Skin cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells are found in the outer layer of the human skin. This particular cancer is one of the most common cancers among the U.S. population, affecting and spreading over more than one million people a year. “Skin cancer is categorized into two separate groups being; malignant melanomas and non-melanoma cancers.” (Adam, 2013)
Basal and squamous cell skin cancer are the most common forms of skin cancer. Multiple studies have shown that these cancers are almost always connected to large amounts of sun exposure. This can come from things like outdoor sports, performing something outdoors with little coverage from clothing, and getting multiple severe sunburns. You can see signs of skin cancer inside and outside of your body. Rough, thick, dry skin patches are common symptoms, but things
...ealthy young or old people can have skin cancer no matter if they do not have the risks factors of mutation error in cells, weak immune system, or family history of cancer, because the main reason is Ultraviolet rays which everyone is exposed to it by being outdoors. Skin cancer can be easily prevented if it is detected early by checking yourself regularly to make sure of any unusual marks or bumps and most important is to protect yourself by applying sunscreen, staying in shade if it is possible especially between 11am to 2pm, and avoiding any indoor tanning. All of us are at risk for skin cancer as The American Cancer Society estimates that 1 out of 7 people will develop some of this type of cancer in their lifetime.
Even though skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, it is also preventable if you know the right steps to take. Education on the different types of cancer, risk factors, and preventative measures will help to decrease your chances of ever hearing that dreaded diagnosis “cancer”. Do self-skin checks every month and take those extra steps to protect yourself when you are outside in the sun. It will pay off in the long run.
Skin cancer is the disease in which the epidermis, also known as the outer layer, is infected with malignant cancer cells. The first case of skin cancer was discovered in 1804 by a French physician named Rene Lannec. There are six types. Three major types, and three minor types of skin cancer. The Major forms are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. The three minor types are sarcoma, merkel cell carcinoma and sebaceous gland carcinoma. The signs and symptoms vary between the different types, but they all have one thing in common, changes in the skin. Changes in the skin could be a growth, a spot that appears to be a rash, or even a sore that doesn’t get any better over time, or turns into a mole. The most common causes of skin cancers is over exposer to UV radiation, tanning or genetics Skin cancer cannot be spread person to person, meaning it is not contagious. Sunburn is the leading cause of skin cancer today. When diagnosing any form of skin cancer, the doctor, or dermatologist may remove a part of the abnormal area of the skin and send it off to a laboratory for testing. Treatment depends on the type of cancer, location stage, cancers aggressiveness or level and the patient’s condition. While most of the time surgery is recommended, it is not always the best method of treatment for everyone. Different surgical procedures that are used to help cure the disease are known as excision, Mohs surgery, curatage and electrodissectaton.
Finally, red and brown patches on the skin can develop anywhere in the body and especially appear in the neck and face area ( areas most exposed to the sun). ( Skin cancer, symptoms, management, and treatment, 2000,p.1)
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. Even so, its recommendations are considered almost “holy” by physicians, nutritionists, and dieters, but in reality, they are the root cause of the problem. A single visit to our local public school cafeteria and it will become clear that they do not have the best interests of the children at heart. What they are feeding our innocent children is preposterous. Doctors, the people we trust and expect to be “the experts”, do not know much about the subject of nutrition. A vast majority of medical schools in the U.S. require just 25-30 hours or less of nutrition training, and some do not require at all. So doctors must rely on the ...
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consuming too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life, I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight.
Nutrition is a basic necessity of life. Without a proper and well-balanced diet, it is difficult for any being, regardless of species, to survive. Unlike that of primates such as the great apes, the human diet is more full of calories and nutrients. Humans have a great understanding of what types of food are necessary to maintain good health. It is difficult to tell when the eating habits of Homo sapiens split apart from the eating habits of these other primates. Yet, one fact is certain. As human evolution continues to progress, the human diet also continues to evolve.
The human skin is the body’s largest organ. Healthy skin protects internal organs from injury, controls body temperature, protects the body from germs/infections, and controls how much water we lose. Melanoma can start anywhere on the human body, but is more common to start on the back and chest of men, the legs of women, and the neck and face for both sexes. One of the main reasons people get Melanoma is because they are exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Not only can you get it from sunlight, but also from tanning lamps, tanning beds, and tanning booths. In order to understand skin cancer it is good to know the three layers of skin; epidermis, dermis, and subcutis. The epidermis is the very thin top layer of the skin. Inside the epidermis there are cells called melanocytes, these are the cells that give our skin color. Melanocytes are also the cells that become melanoma (skin cancer). The dermis is the middle layer of the skin that contains hair follicles, sweat glands, blood vessels, and nerves. Last is the subcutis which contains the protein and fat that helps the body control the temperature. Signs of melanoma is usually spotting on the skin that is usually brown or black, but could be pink, tan, or white. If a person is still in early-stage melanomas, then they could be treated with only surgery. If the melanomas is more advanced, they must go through surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy,
One of the reason’s why I felt my nutrition needed to changes is because nutrition is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle, the way that we eat and what foods we consume can have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Nutrition plays a huge role in multiple facets of a person’s life energy, health, skin, weight, confidence, and more making having a good control on your eating habits extremely important. How we eat over the years and what foods we routinely choose to eat can eventually have a lasting effect on use and what we consider to be most appealing and appetizing at any given moment. Having these craving and routine habits makes eating, diet, and nutrition both a behavior and a lifestyle choice that can be changed over time with help from the theories learned in this class.
Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
Nutrition is the intake of foods needed to meet the body’s dietary requirements, good nutrition is referred to as knowing a well-balanced diet combined with regular exercise (Who.int, 2016). A healthy well balanced diet consists
