My passion and admiration for the healthcare field began during my teenage years, when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis—a chronic, autoimmune disease affecting various joints throughout my body. As I went through years of treatment, my physician and other medical professionals were instrumental in helping me to maintain a positive attitude after my diagnosis. Their care was the impetus for my future goals, as I saw the genuine goodness that they felt from helping others. As a result of all the medical help and emotional support that I received from these medical providers throughout my youth, I have chosen to pursue a career in the service of others through the public health field.
Confronting the experience of being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at a young age and the subsequent years of treatment that went along with it taught me how to take better care of my body and to improve my well-being. That role allowed me to gain much experience regarding healthcare policies and regulations in action. My work experience at a hospital also showed me that not every individual has health insurance, and that I was lucky and privileged enough to be insured through my mother, which allowed me to afford the care that I needed to receive during my youth. This is why I believe that all individuals should have access to high-quality and affordable healthcare services. Society has, throughout history, introduced several questions that we, as a people, have to answer. However, none of these answers can satisfy everyone and have some negative drawbacks. The editors of Searching for Great Ideas agree with that statement based what they said on page 30… Some current issues that can be examined are gender and sexual equality in society, the access to education, and health care. I feel that the world’s most important questions involve, in some way, health care. One such question that I feel has the uttermost importance is that our system of health insurance is linked to employment. Health insurance usually is provided by the employer, with some contribution from the employee; but more than ever, we have many people working part-time, or working through other non-traditional arrangements (like at home). Therefore, it limits many people from receiving health care insurance and proposes “do you think that all Americans should have health insurance?” I feel, like most people, that everyone should have the option to have health care insurance if they so choose. This also causes several subcategory questions to formulate from this question. As a future Dr., these will be issues that I will have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though I won’t have the authority to change some important health care legislation, I do have the power to comfort my patients through their tough times.

My commitment to the health care profession is to provide excellent care for my patients. I will work to help manage patients with their illnesses, prevent disease, and promote a health lifestyle. We are health care educators and advocates for patients, families and communities. There is a mix of flexibility, opportunity and job security offered by nursing not currently found in any other profession, which allows me to rotate among different employment settings. I choose this profession to help the ones in need and improve the quality of life for others. There are so many areas of nursing out there, but all these areas overlap and the more I learn and absorb, the better nurse leader I will become.
Ten years ago I was sitting in a classroom striving to understand the English language and how to read and write properly. I am a Mexican immigrant who came into the United States following the “American Dream” in search of a better life. I am a hard working individual with a passion for service and self-determination to make a difference in people’s lives. I come from a family that values unity and service to others. Caring for other people is what I love to do and it’s what makes me feel I have a real purpose in life. A career as a health care professional will fulfil both my personal and professional goals.
Healthcare is intriguing. The health and wellness of people always has been intriguing and always will be. My background in healthcare came as an environmental pass down with a father as a Registered Nurse and a mother in healthcare management. It was inevitable that the journey of healthcare started being instilled without my knowledge of it, as a young child. A constant learning in the health sciences and management directed my way. By the start of college, the intrigue lead to compassion, lighting a fire for the administration of healthcare. This calling spurred by a great woman, my mother, who is a national redesign award winner by the Bureau of Primary Healthcare in Health Disparities. These footsteps down her similar path with careful guidance, but not to be confused with an easy path.
...forming bench research at Barry University and Weill Cornell Medical College in the Traveler’s Research Fellowship, I have been exposed to the side of medicine where scientists work every day to find cures for diseases and save lives. Experiencing different aspects of medicine has made me a more competent individual to thrive in this field and has deepened my interest and passion to pursue medicine as a career.I believe that those who fight with so little against so much truly need others to help them in their struggle. During my residency, I had the opportunity to work with the Rheumatology Rehabilitation team at the University of Alberta (U of A). I met passionate mentors in physical and occupational therapy dedicated to helping arthritis patients preserve and optimize joint function. There was one man with rheumatoid arthritis attending the program who said the most important learning point he wanted me to take away was how much his rheumatologist and the rehab team had changed his life. Prior to starting biologic therapy, he was completely debilitated in his day-to-day life and unable to perform simple activities such as picking up his young children. He now found himself not only with disease control, but also quality of life. Being able to take care of people is something that I wanted to do as a job when I was a child. As a child my parents bought me toy doctor kit. My father has been a diabetic since he was a kid and I would always do a check up with my toys and I always said he would be okay. I 've always been interested in healthcare since I was a young boy because I would be able to take care of and help people who are ill. Throughout this past year when my father was in the nursing home and in the hospital, I would learn what was going on with my dad from a medical level and then talking to him he would not be able to understand due to his dementia and I would be able to explain things to him so he could understand. The aspect of everything going on and talking to him about so he would not be more worried or upset made him feel more better and relaxed. Having the ability to do that with the patients I come in contact with each day is very rewarding to do that each and everyday. All my public health courses and internship have fully shaped me to become a professional in the health field. I am knowledgeable and practiced in applying research and statistics to populations and health programs and evaluations, promoting cultural competence, identifying principles of health necessary to plan effective short and long term health interventions, and identifying community health needs. During the four years I spent in this major, I have learned so much about who I am and who I want to be. I am thankful for all my professor, advisers and colleagues who have helped me during my time here at the School of Public Health.
A key component of public health is that it is always changing with the advent of new technologies. So many discoveries and initiatives have helped improve persons’ environments; inversely, there are threats such as climate change and diseases that progress from endemic to epidemic, presenting daunting challenges to even the most experienced of health professionals. Whether the issue regards sickle cell disease or smoking cessation, everything has some association to one another in the sense I can apply the skills I have learned to combat the barriers that impede one’s quality of life. My time studying public health as an undergrad as well my two years as a public health professional has opened a lot of opportunities for me to succeed in life; both academically and professionally, the various disciplines of public health have changed my perspectives and helped influence me to make a difference for the betterment of those around me. As one with so much interest in public health, I feel I have learned a lot, yet a lot to learn.
Nursing has been a long time childhood dream. Some may choose nursing for so many other reasons, for me nursing is my passion and I believe I have a caring personality which is a key point of nursing. Coming from a country that had been in a civil war for long since I was a little child, and growing up in that kind of situation, seeing everyday people die for even minor things because of no doctors or nurses available, left me with deep sadness and wanting to make difference in the lives of so who are in need. This experience had planted in mea caring natures that I want to make use of it. Coming to America has made my dream of becoming a nurse come true. I was able go to college while having a family as well. I have always admired what nurses do for their patients. Doctors only see patients for few minutes but nurses stay with patients 24, 7 therefore; physicians only make diagnosis while nurses heal the patient.

I want patients to walk out my room feeling like I have made a positive change in their life, whether it is small or big. Responsibility comes with playing such an important role in other people’s lives and it is how I embrace this responsibility that will determine how I change the lives of others. Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
I consider myself to be a mature, goal oriented, and dedicated individual who enjoys interacting with groups of people. I am devoted to improving the health of the entire population through population-based assessment and intervention, and take part in shaping public health policies. As a physician, I prefer not to depend on pharmacotherapy as a primary tool of treatment.
