I am pursuing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Pre-Medicine. I hope to move on to medical school once I receive my Bachelors. After taking the Strong Interest Inventory I learned that I am investigative, social, and conventional; I learned that my top two interest areas are Science and Medical Science; and, I learned that a Physician and Chemist are some of my top ten strong occupations. After learning all of this it further confirmed that pursuing a medical degree was the right choice for me. If getting into medical school does not work out I plan on pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. The reason that I have chosen this as my backup plan is because it requires many of the same skills a doctor would need. Chemical Engineers need to have adequate problem solving and critical thinking skills in order to be successful (“Essential Skills”). These are skills that are taught from a young age but take an incredibly long time to master. These skills were present in my Strong Interest Inventory as being in my highest themes. All of these things pointed to a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering because I enjoy chemistry. I was fortunate to find a backup plan that I am satisfied with although my goal is still to get into medical school.
There are a variety of skills that I will need to develop in order to be successful as a doctor. Doctors typically have “a concern for people, an inquiring mind, an interest in people, a rational approach, an open mind, imagination, determination, and humility” (“Doctors”). These skills are essential to being successful and are things I need to work on. Throughout the course of this class I have started to develop some of these skills already. ...

I am currently volunteering at the Mayo Clinic; by doing this I am developing practical, clinical experience that will help me determine if being a doctor is the appropriate choice for me. It will also help my make connections with people currently working in the medical field. I will volunteer for the entire four years I attend UNF.
