MULAN is a great variation of the Disney version Mulan, paying much more attention to the female empowerment and raising important issues for the recent agenda. Even though it has a difficult task on living up to its animated version, it offers much more promise towards an entertaining and remarkable movie. It follows the fairytale format and it satisfies the genre expectations. All of the characters are well established and has a clear motive in the story, which causes the audience to root for the characters, which is a crucial quality in family-adventure genre. However, taking an animated movie and turning into a live-action movie brings a lot risks with it. It satisfies what the audience is expecting, with high stakes and relatable characters. What the writer wrote in the script will give the DP many opportunities to crate beautiful images and mesmerize the viewer. There will also be a lot of stunts to keep the viewer interested from all ages and all demographics. The dialogue is also well done, serving the genre qualifications. It is not too heroic, to the extent that we cannot relate to the character or too timid that we are not inspired. However, I still believe the audience needs more scenes to relate to the compassionate side of Mulan. As she is going against multiple things at the same time, she conflicts with physical obstacles like the raiders and more abstract things like the law that does not let her fight. All of the characters are very well written. All of their objectives are clear and most of them go through a character arc at some point in the story. Mulan has to learn to co-operate with others and learn to fight “like a man”, as Gaius learns to care again. The antagonist, Daiyu is also well written. The audience learns her struggle and why she is fighting against men and how she ended up this way. I believe all the female talent will really be attracted to this script, as it touches upon many important issues mentioned above. I don’t believe this is a script to demonstrate an unique voice to the writer, since it was a story every one knew, but she has done a great job of coming up with a interesting variation.
