Some individuals consider the Internet to be one of the greatest inventions of our time. Their reasoning is due to the positive outcomes that have come with this such as connecting people around the world and aiding in education, research, new, etc. Specifically, in relation to the film industry, the Internet has provided positive and negative outcomes. The Internet allows for consumers to download films illegally, which lowers ticket sales and profit. At the same time, the Internet has become an essential tool for rising filmmakers and has also helped movie industries to advertise new films for little to no cost. Overall, it is a two-sided argument of whether the film industry’s convergence with the Internet has been helpful or detrimental.
Before diving into the pros and cons of the Internet in relation to the film industry, one should understand a brief evolution of movie distribution in history. Before the convenience of being able to watch movies in our homes, films were shown at movie palaces. These palaces were “full-time single screen movie theaters that provided a more hospitable movie going environment” (Campbell, Fabos & Martin, p. 247). The first movie palace opened in 1914 and following that, mid-city movie theaters became popular. These theaters were “built in convenient locations near urban mass transit stations to attract business of the urban and suburban middle class” (Campbell et al., p. 247). As technology advanced, the videocassette appeared in the 1970s. This invention decreased movie theater ticket sales, as people were now able to rent movies and watch them in the comfort of their own homes. However, technology continued to progress and eventually, the film industry converged with the Internet. With this ...

Following the demise of the studio system, the film industry became threatened by the increasing popularity of television after some film theaters became bankrupt and closed. The new medium of television meant people could enjoy entertainment in the comfort and safety of their living rooms, thereby decreasing the revenue needed to sustain the movie theater b...
Many believe the internet was an over night sensation, that one day, someone invented the internet and it spread in popularity faster than Tickle Me Elmo or the Macarena. Although the internet did have a surge of commercial popularity, with the invention of Mosaic and later with e-commerce, it was created many years ago with the development of military networking technologies. Also, the internet, unlike many pop culture fads of the nineties, will continue to see a growth in popularity and usefulness as a form of media throughout the information age. Sure, the internet became overambitious to the point where many internet start-up companies lost their businesses in the recession of the past few years. The quality of the internet, however, has increased as companies realize that there exists competition and smarter consumers that demand superiority. The internet has taken the world so far in its short commercial life; the future of the internet provides limitless possibilities of a much different future.
The media play an indispensable role in modern life, and are considered amongst the most powerful and inaccurate sources of social information, education and entertainment. Our mass media is an electronic (TV, film, video, videogames, internet) visually dominated media with print (newspaper, magazine)...

Movie theaters have been around for a long time. As time has evolved movie demand was increasing and wanted a more convenient route. “Blockbuster was founded by David Cook, who had previously owned a business that provided computer software services to the oil and gas industry in Texas. Cook saw the potential in the video-rental business and after opening the first Blockbuster in 1985 (A&E).” and was the only company to provide a walk in store for movie rentals. This business was booming and most of the rental sales came from the first three weeks after a movie was released to VHS or DVD. This niche in the market is rapidly failing today.

How could a company that was built into a multibillion dollar empire fail less than two decades later? Blockbuster Entertainment started with one store in Dallas in 1985 and rose up to become the dominant force in the movie rental industry. They were acquired by Viacom, at the pinnacle of their success, for $8.4 billion in 1994 and were in bankruptcy by 2010. A series of blunders by upper management, highlighted by a lack of strategic vision, led to Blockbuster’s rapid decline and ultimate failure.
The motion picture industry is just like any other industry and to be successful it must turn a profit on the movies it creates and produces. Everyone loves movies and the motion picture industry does everything in its power to produce movies that will bring in millions of dollars in profits. The motion picture industry has created high grossing movies such as Spider-Man 3 with a total gross of $336,530,303 as well as flops such as Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure, which only brought in $23,746,066. Diving into descriptive statistics we are able to compare the 5-number summary, mean, mode, range, and standard deviation for the opening gross, total gross, theaters, and number of weeks for the 100 item sample taken from the 300-400 movies produced.

Movie theaters are focusing on moving from film projection systems to digital and 3D systems. With these added technological changes, ticket prices typically rise creating revenue gains for the industry. These changes are drawing more consumers into the theaters because the in-theater experience is something that they cannot get from online streaming at

The film industry has always been somewhat of a dichotomy. Grounded firmly in both the worlds of art and business the balance of artistic expression and commercialization has been an issue throughout the history of filmmaking. The distinction of these two differing goals and the fact that neither has truly won out over the other in the span of the industry's existence, demonstrates a lot of information about the nature of capitalism.

A movie theater has its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that people can see the showing of different movies that have been newly released. The disadvantage is that, that is all there is to it and nothing more. At home, you can control the variety and ways to watch a movie. People buy many movies to watch at home and it can be anything at any time even at any place. The only bad thing about it is that they cannot see any of the newest released movies that recently came out in theaters. There are two types of ways people watch movies at their homes. One way is people already own DVDs or have bought many of them and start watching them in their DVD players. The other ways are streaming a movie through the internet. For this to happen, people would mainly buy the monthly subscriptions such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Through this subscription people do not only watch movies in their homes but they also watch television shows. The only downside is there is a very limited number of movies added onto these
