Film Analysis: She is the Man

Throughout history, men were expected to be more fearless than women. Thousands of years ago, men were responsible for hunting animals and protecting the family from danger. Now, men are responsible for earning family income and fixing all the things in the house. Even though these roles makes them look tough on the outside, they might, at times, still feel vulnerable and lonely on the inside like women do. When women feel lonely and upset, they usually turn to family and friends to get comfort from them. However, men tend to repress their feelings more than women. The former Canadian president, Lester Pearson, once said: “Behind every successful man, there is a great woman.” Why are women so important to men? Not only do women satisfy men’s physical needs, but also women provide emotional support to men. However, why is it that men do not just talk to their same-sex friends about it? Is there a difference between male and female and same-sex friendships? From the movie, “She’s the Man,” it is evident that men feel awkward and uncomfortable when talking to other men about their personal issues; women, on the other hand, are more comfortable in talking to their friends about personal issues.
The movie “She’s the Man” shows that men are more unwilling to express their emotions with same-sex friends than women do in a friendship. In the movie, when Duke Orsino is struggling through his relationship with his crush, he turns to Viola Hastings for advice that he later regrets. Viola Hastings is a girl who disguised herself as a male soccer player in the movie. This way, Duke and Viola would have more chances to share their feelings with each other and, eventually, can have a more intimate relationship. There is a great possibility that their relationship may upgrade to a different level, such as a romantic relationship.
Everyone needs a person to share his or her feelings. However, men and women tend to find different ways and people to express their emotions. The movie “She’s the Man” shows the theory that woman is higher in self-disclosure in general, compared with men. Same-sex friendship between men is usually less intimate than same-sex friendship between women. As a result, it is better for a man to have an intimate opposite-sex friendship to lessen his loneliness. More importantly, men should try to be more open.
