The United States of America has long had a history of gun ownership. So much so, that the founding fathers felt the need to secure gun rights of the U.S citizens with the second amendment, which states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” In recent years, however, mass shootings have gained the attention of the media causing much polarization between people demanding restrictive gun laws that could infringe on the U.S citizens rights to keep and bear arms, and others who scream unconstitutional at any mention of any type of additional regulations addressing gun ownership.
Supporters of gun rights are quick to ask, “ If U.S citizens are disarmed how will they protect themselves from unlawful criminals who operate in complete disregard of the law?” Further they assert that “Guns don't kill people, people kill people.” With that in mind, second amendment rights of the U.S citizen can be preserved while regulating gun ownership through compromises such as standardized safety classes that will teach children proper firearm safety, allowing properly training citizens to carry weapons in currently restricted places, and abolishing laws of cities that ban anyone from possessing firearms.
If a standardized firearm safety class was offered through the school system or local government that children are required to take and pass, we could possibly eliminate many incidental firearm discharges resulting in injury or death. Standardized firearm training could bring to light the truth in the statement “Guns don't kill people, people kill people” and show citizens that not all gun owners are a danger to society. ...e reducing what some may see as “the gun problem”. Training citizens to properly defend themselves, teaching children to respect firearms, and allowing firearms to be carried into currently restricted areas by citizens with a proper concealed carry license would help our society become a much safer place.
