Feudalism began in England during the medieval period. Times were hard, people needed help from a rich land owner to survive. The kingdom would offer safety to those who worked for the kingdom, along with other beneficial perks needed for the survival of the peasants. If you fight for the kingdom then you will receive great amounts of land, but people who farmed didn’t receive as much in return. It kind of shocks me because they had a hard enough time getting food let alone having to provide an army to protect its people against a possible invasion from another kingdom. If they could have just focused on necessary things to survive they would have been a lot richer in the form of resources.

The start of feudalism would make it easier for the king because he would not have to rule over a large territory because the area would be under the control of several nobles. This was a political system in which each class on a manor would have to provide something for the society in order to receive assistance in return. A manor consisted of several villages where the lord had overlooked each area. The rise of merchant guilds facilitated long distance trade during the medieval period [1301 - 1500], and lasted into the 18th century. Guilds were social, political and economic organizations in medieval towns. They cared for social and economic welfare of members. Guilds assisted in the rise of new middle class. They enjoyed a trade monopoly in towns, allowed members to earn a living wage. Guilds bypassed or contravened feudalism and manorialism when they purchased self government charters for towns from nobles or started new towns.

The system was first introduced as a means of protection for the king. However, as time grew the opportunity to use it as means of exchange for services between the king and vassal was found. Instead of just forcing people into the king’s army the idea of giving fiefs to those who would pledge their life to service the king was decided on. Imagine having to keep a promise to support a lord for exchange for land. Or having to work on land in transaction for protection and a bit of the harvest for your family. This is one effect of the rules of feudalism and the manor system (OI). For Europeans in the Middle Ages, the social, political and economic lives were influenced by the feudal system.
A system of small, independent governments led to the concept known as feudalism. Kings with large land holdings would give land to nobles, who would give portions of their land to knights in exchange for protection from invasions. An economic structure, the manorial system, became the economic structure for many regions of Europe. This allowed for each manor to be a self-sufficient community by growing their own food and taking care of their clothing needs. The common people, known as serfs, would provide the labor for the farms and because of constant warfare, sickness and starvation the average life span was only thirty years during this period. This helps prove that the differences between European and Japanese feudalism made limited government more likely to develop in the West because a contract limits what the lords and vassals could do. William, the king of English, said, “I command you [the vassal] to summon all those who are under your charge......and bring ready with you those five knights that you owe me[.]”1 This helps prove that European feudalism was based on contract because when you owe someone something, it implies an agreement. The key terms are I command you and owe. The vassal has to send troops because he has to. He is under the rule of his lord. The lord tells his vassal that “[H]e will perform everything [that] was in [their] agreement [because] [he] submitted himself to him and chose his will.”2 This helps prove that European feudalism was based on a contract because a contract implies an agreement. The vassal chose the lord himself, so therefore, the vassal is under the lord's rule and needs to follow the agreement. On Japan's view of feudalism, their feudalism wasn't based on contract. On page 122 and 124 of The Tale of Heike, it implies personal relationships with the lord and vassal. “Despite his predicament, [the lord] still thought of [his vassal].”3 When the lord dies, the vassal kills himself saying, “For whom do I have to fight now?”4 This helps prove that Japanese feudalism was based on a personal relationship with lord and vassal because the lord and vassal actually cared for each other. Before the Magna Carta, England was rooted in the ideas of feudalism. Feudalism was introduced by William the Conqueror after he victoriously beat Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. William needed a way to control England so he established the feudal system. The feudal system allowed William to keep the people of England loyal to him while he was off at war with neighbouring countries. The feudal system was a pyramid of powers and everyone had a rank and role. The top of the pyramid was the King and below him were different ranking that all gave loyalty to the king while he gave them land.
